Didn't read it, but is it Zoro wank? If so I will like this thread.:myman:
Isn't everything in this forum a Zoro wank?

LUFFY VS ZORO AS CHARACTERS

LUFFY
Issue with Luffy is that while his character archetype has innate complexity associated with it if we try to analyze his goal. He wants to be Freest Man in the World which is something that can one of the more complex character layers in One Piece. Like what exactly does he mean by Freedom? How much of his freedom means suppression for the rest of the world? Does he want Anarchy because without overthrowing current regime, the world government and ending the Marines he can't be freest man in the world.

But even if he ends current regime, a better regime comes along, said regime would also not let Luffy roam around freely due to his crime. So for him to truly be Freest man in the world he would have to at least over throw any form of authority, and if he does that what does that mean for common people? They would be looted by pirates, no one would be there to protect him? Would Luffy ultimately take all the pirates down as well? Once again taking away hopes, dreams and freedom of the rest of the world. But then what? Does he become sole governing authority of the world who rules with iron thumb and don't let anyone rise above him? But by that logic he is taking away freedom of the rest of the world.

Now Luffy doesn't exactly have any larger than life or even noble motivations for wanting to change the world. Oda hasn't exactly explored on that, which again if he did Luffy could have been one of the more interesting characters in anime, but instead his goal to be freest man in the world just sorta kinda come to him. He just wants it because he wants it, not because of any resolution, not because of any trauma he been through, not because as a kid he has seen too many miseries and sufferings in the world that he wants to end. So what Luffy's character archetype is much more complex than Zoro's, his execution is so flawed he feels sub par character.

Issue is Oda hasn't really explored the most complex aspect of his character and instead focused on him being a bumbling idiot who eats meats and has weird ass interractions with arc princesses and screams "I WANNA BE KING OF THE PIRATES AT THE TOP OF HIS LUNGS" and his character hasn't evolved even slightly in 25 years.

It sucks because Oda doesn't explicitly state Luffy is selfish either despite his selfish motivations, instead he has to be second coming of Jesus christ, hero to people etc.

Oda had potential to make one of the greatest protagonists by not going to usual "retarded shounen protagonist hero"

ZORO

Zoro on the other hand has a simple character archetype but his execution is much better that makes him much more relatable. While he has simple goal of attaining World's Strongest title, his motivation comes from trauma of child hood. He took tragedy of his child hood, lost of his best friend and used it to fuel his motivation. But not only that, he also wants to full fill his dead friends dream, showing nobility.

Both layers are very easy to follow and straight forward. Then he was shown what it means to World's Strongest, how ignorant he is to the rest of the world and he changes his out look on the world, genuinely changes the way he interracts gets a lot more serious and has a chip on his shoulder and focus. Against Mihawk his motivation also evolved into not just wanting to become WSS due to promise to his dead friend and making his name reach the heavens so Kuina can hear him, he also wants to become World's Strongest swordsman for Luffy's sake so he can make him Pirate King.

Then in Thriller Bark his motivation further evolved to now he values Luffy's ambition and protecting his crew above his own. Not only that he believes if he can't protect his captain's ambition he isn't worthy of becoming WSS. And all these changes stick to Zoro, they are consistent through out, once again natural character development.

Not to mention other layers like Zoro being level headed when level headedness and effective leadership is needed like in Alabasta, Whiskey Peak, Thriller Bark, Water 7, Punk Hazard, Wano etc Luffy on the other hand hasn't really shown true leadership, all he has shown is ability to motivate people which is important part of leadership but what happens after he has actually motivated people? When it comes to making tough decisions Zoro always have to bring Luffy to right path. And other layers like kindness behind his tough exterior, arrogance yet awareness of where he is, hatered for atrocities etc.

Its much easier to like Zoro than it is to like Luffy because his character writing is simply much more effective. Luffy just feels like is sorta kinda there with no natural progression. Most interest part of his character is never even explored and all Luffy is is a bumbling idiot eating meat, having weird interactions with princess and screaming "I WANNA BE KING OF PIRATES" at the top of his lungs.

This is what happens when fanboyism goes too far

Zoro best character for what? Based on what?

Zoro is only best character coz you guys think cool panels makes u a great character
Based on Thriller Bak. Thriller Bak made him the greatest.

Most mangas are based on friendship, self-sacrifice. Oda took it to a whole new level with Zoro. The build-up for this moment was magnificent. Oda emphasized throughout the story how much Zoro value his ambition.
- "I’m going to be the world’s greatest swordsman! All I have left is my destiny! My name may be infamous… but it’s gonna shake the world!"
- "Until my name reaches Heaven itself… I’ll become stronger!… I’ll become the strongest swordsman in the world!"
- "There is someone that I must meet again. And until that day… not even Shinigami himself can take my life away! "
- "When I decided to follow my dream, I had already discarded my life."
- "But if I were to take even one step back, I believe that all those important oaths, promises and many other deals 'til now, will all go to waste and I'll never be able to return before you, ever again"

There are many examples of self-sacrifice in a manga. But Zoro's one was just more meaningful because of the build-up and because of how much he values it. Kuma commented how great his ambition is. Sanji wanted to die in his place to protect his dream. The execution of this whole thing was Oda at his best. The way Zoro tried to hide everything from his comrades with "nothing happened", made him the GOAT. Any character can be made badass. Kenpachi is probably more badass. But he doesnt have as nice character progression/story like Zoro. The same guy who threatened to kill Luffy if he comes between his ambition, decided to throw his life away for the sake of Luffy. Beautiful, isnt it?

People tend to like the secondary characters more than the main characters. That's totally normal. There's other good MCs like Guts, Lelouch, Edward, L, Eren, Senku, Tanjiro, etc. And most of the shounen protagonists are usually muscle heads (Luffy, Goku, Deku,...) but it doesn't mean that they're a bad executed characters. Luffy also have self-sacrifice throughout the series and strive to get stronger in order to protect his crew.

Hanamichi best shounen protagonist hands down.

Kidding, it's actually Edward Elric.

(Yo, Deku is ok. He actually have a sense of progression, and a good one).

Lowkey wanna recommend World Trigger to people. Most characters are generic AF. Seriously. half of them are pretty much copy paste from each other, but the few good ones are REALLY good.
And the power system is very decent. Lots of tactics during the battles, instead of the "me stronger. me win".

Bro I have only made three threads in the midst of all Zoro wank from Oda and this is one of them.

Would appreciate if you'd read it and give feedback
@Cinera still waiting on yours.
I haven't read it in full (I forgot), but I strongly agree with @Jiihad's comment:
Nah you’re right hea, Luffy isn’t a well executed character. Him wanting freedom inherently has in small print that “anything is justified as long as Luffy gets what he wants” see ID, while conversely Zoro is simplicity done right. I remember one of tha student councilers when I was in middle school always told us “I’d much rather you take a easy class and pass it than take a hard class and fail” that’s what Zoro is, he’s tha easy class that got excelled at. While Luffy is tha hard class that failed

Tha world around Luffy changed and expanded in these 20+ years of serialization, but Luffy remained stagnant. Inherently that isn’t a bad thing.....if there was a clear rhyme and reason behind said characters goal and mindset. But till this point there isn’t, Luffy wants tha most freedom for what? Zoro wants tha WSS title to make Kuinas childhood dream a reality and honor her legacy. So no matter what tha world around Zoro does, he has that anchor to hold his character

I think its a bit polarizing problems to be honest.

- Zoro from pre-TS was a good character. He had a resolve, bushido-type way of life deal, he knew how to have fun and being involved in petty competitiveness, i can imagine him in a sake-drinking contest, his gag was also not overused. And most of all, he is like an alarm to Luffy, a stern and strong reminder that can guide Luffy's chaotic power from going too wild. Zoro was the focus Luffy need to steer his madness.

The problem with post-TS Zoro is, Oda made him into Solo Leveling protagonist or Bleach deuteragonist if you will. He was reduced to a smirking badass with no clear obstacle, be it in powerlevel but more significantly in character. His jobis to look cool, give a one-liner, slashing his sword to cut mountains, and chuckling afterwards. A journey with special treatment from the author, where Oda is afraid to really put him cornered in battle, being threatened by a situation or an enemy, or even making a mistake. So Zoro enjoys a life where the authors himself must go out of his way and go around to avoid a real clash resulting in even a possibility of Zoro looking bad powerlevel-wise.

This treatment from Oda imo may be based on how badass Oda wants Japanese people to be perceived, or he just want to give an inspiration to Japanese men in general. Like, "this is how Japanese people to behave in the face of a challenge!" That kinda attitude and badassery wishful thinking he insert. I consider the current Zoro to be a inferiorly built as a character compared to the good character Zoro was pre-TS. But at least Zoro become much stronger compared to his pre-timeskip self, and he seemed more unflinching in battle. Even if i see a level of cringe approaching that of Bleach chars, at least his char development has a result that match along the lines of his past vision and aspirations.

But then here comes Luffy, who suffered even worse fate as a character. Luffy's dream, is complex. It involves reaching a certain place, obtaining a treasure, beating any obstacle he find, and being the one with most freedom. Its full of various interpretations, and by shonen theme, if Luffy wanna be truly free from any obligations well he should be WSC first at the very least, in order to fulfill the other conditions. But he has experienced deep pain and suffering as a turning point. Ace's death. His nakama being banished by Kuma. The display of powers from every corner, making him realizing his place as a tiny speck amongst the Three Great Powers.

It should change his character drastically. The desire to protect his crew should bring him to the extremes of methods to attain power or to topple his enemies. Instead, we have Luffy regressing to an even more immature and bratty clueless version of himself compared to pre-TS. This is absurd. Even with Akainu fisting Ace, Enraged Army stomping him even far after the point of total exhaustion, Kizaru toying with him in MF, where is the development? Where is the consequence? Where is the character development for Luffy?

I expect Luffy to be developed with experience and emotional depth. Having nightmares in his sleep. Having fake smile with extreme rage underneath, extreme focus to do anything to fulfill his goal to the point of punishing any friends that disagree to his long-term target method, becoming a ruthless and war strategist, episodic unpredictability, mental exhaustion between wars due to having an obligation to become a pillar for all his nakama. Along the lines of Eren, but with laughing and being funny as coping mechanism?

Well because i have such an expectation for Luffy's char development after his world/life was destroyed by suffering and destructive experience, it may be why i find Luffy's character result case to be worse than Zoro.
