Shanks needed to bet his arm on this new era to usher in the man Roger was waiting for, who will be able to take this challenge on his back, become pirate king, subjugating the yonko as pirate king and defeating the marines (including their hidden forces).

Oden told Shanks, Rayleigh and the others to not interfere with his fight. So I'm guessing Shanks wouldn't want to take revenge for Oden as that would go against Oden's wishes.

If they fought before 2 years ago, it was probably the typical fights for territory.

it's safe to assume Kaido fought all of this 5 people before

many people claim Shanks and Kaido ONLY fought 2 years ago ... but that's not logical

in the Kaido introduction we get to know he fought Yonko and Marine MANY TIMES

but

he didn't fought Big Mom for well over 20 years
he didn't fought Whitebeard for at least 10 years

so ... Shanks is MOST PROBABALE option here

so much that Shanks wanted to go with Oden to Wano and help Oden
