Character Discussion Kaido D. Poorly Written - Is It Possible To Enjoy Kaido After Your 13th Birthday?

Kaido’s character design and Devil Fruit are just nothing, they tells us nothing about his world views and overall character, mainly because Kaido doesn’t have consistent world views or a consistent character and contradicts himself every other panel lol.
Kaido's design and devil fruit do indeed tell us something about the concept behind the character and his crew, but they are consistent with a problem about this character that I've already mentioned in other threads, which is that he's overall conceptualized as a Wano villain but hardly as an emperor that exists (and has an even more important impact) out of that small island. It feels like Oda forgot that Kaido is, first and foremost, a Yonko and not only Japan's oni; and this is a big problem when it comes to building the character.

Kaido's and the Beasts Pirates concepts overall are just a big amount of wasted potential, though. It would have been very easy to think of something richer than this; mainly because Oda himself had the material in front of his eyes but never made full use of it. Of course we need to see Kaido's past and so on, but he's a character incredibly easy to write and I feel like Oda just failed so far and will keep failing with him.

I think Kaido character is designed in a way that the timing of making him more understandable must coincide with when he's about to show impressive strength and shock the protagonist, to make it more impactful, right now his struggle and reasons are still a mystery

there's hints for people who actually care about characterization tho and am sure they will be addressed

a moment like when Kaido tested Momo to address his name, and how it made him so angry when he didn't abandon his name, this moment probably was glossed over by many people, but it actually show there's more to him than meet the eye, especially when his daughter basically abandoned his name , it's also interesting we don't know his last name despite him caring about the subject

Kaido is an important villain and most of the new world was build up to his story, I really don't think Oda will make him just a strong dude that Luffy will defeat with a new gear or whatever

Oda always had the issue of Balancing the focus between the Locals and The Villain group. Especially in arcs like Alabasta Dressrossa and Now Wano.

Skypiea and WCI and Thriller Bark benefited from the villains and Locals being tied in the first place meaning you can expand on both at once.

In Alabasta Oda had to cut off a lot of the focus on the civil war because it would make the arc too long. That was almost two decades ago, and Oda already showed signs of not knowing to control himself when it comes to Character bloat and overly ambitious WorldBuilding, something that has plagued One Piece a lot since the Timeskip.

Wano could be argued to be the Opposite of Alabasta, where the Scabbards and Yakuza have an Overwhelming amount of focus on the expense of the Villains

Strength does not make for a good character though.
I mean I know you are trolling but this is actually sort of lame

You seem not to understand what a “good character” even is.

characters are good only within context.

and you have literally no awareness of context

like do you honestly believe a Doflamingo level weak ass character can work in the context of this arc? Is Strength NOT a good quality to have as the big bad of this war?
Like this is bordering on just stupid

Had to respond to this comment just to elaborate on how objectively useless and laughably stupid it is lol.

Oda is never going to write a major arc villain that is so weak, that he can't last until Luffy fights him lol. Like Oda would never make Kaido so weak that he would've been defeated by Asura Doji before Luffy even looked at him. The "arc villain who is so weak that he can't even make it to fighting Luffy" is so nonexistent that I question why on earth you took time out of your day to make this comment lol.

This is such an obvious point to make that I'm pretty sad I even had to make it tbh.

So in other words, strength by itself still never makes for a good arc villain, because every arc villain is going to be relatively stronger than everyone else around them until it's time for Luffy to fight them.

In other words, water is wet.

There is only one thing I will say............kaido has very less pannel time......taking only wano into consideration kaido has to share the big bad role with orochi.......orochi is more connected with wano hence he feels more relevant......kaido also has to share the Big bad role with big mom........thats the only prob.............

I know this is a bait thread but I’ve found Kaido to be a little disappointing so far mainly because he’s taken a backstage to Orochi (till recently) and the constant “Muh Oden1111”

Need his backstory desperately.
Mind if I ask how a backstory can possibly save the trainwreck that is Kaido?

Like no amount of backstory will justify the fact that he lives his entire life in fear of Oden or that he was subservient to Orochi so far lol. The best a backstory can do is explain exactly why Kaido is so disappointing, not redeem him entirely.

He was never afraid of Oden though, but it’s useless to try to convince you otherwise man.

Fun thread.

Because it’ll give us a better understanding of how his character? Might not be good enough but I’m going to remain hopeful.

But like I said, how does that make his character better? Better understanding a terrible character does not improve the quality of that character. Kaido is a inconsistent mess of generic villain tropes, no backstory is saving that lol.

Sure, the question is about why Kaido is likeable in any way? There is nothing like him to like lol. He is the definition of generic, on the off occasion that he's actually playing the roll of Arc Villain and not screaming-jobber who only exists to hype the strength of other characters.

Yeah thats how you view it and its fine......thats your point of view....others in this forums don't have " these" probs you mentioned......I don't like brook.....imo he is a shitty character........but there are so many people(majority) who likes him.........people can hold different opinions.....there is no metrics.........
