Personally, I've always said that King is just a little bit stronger than Queen, which he is.
But now that Queen is fightning Sanji, we're already reading stuff like Mingo > Kaido's third man. When Mingo was called "weak" by Kaido himself, while Jack was said to be "strong".

It's not the first we see a non-straw hat defeating a commander, so I wouldn't be surprised if Marco defeats King.
Also, saying that Marco is not a major character is not totally correct. He is certainly more important than Killer, Hawkins, X-Drake, the scabbards, and even Kid. Don't forget he was WB's 1st division commander and the man who fought BB. He was highly anticipated and we knew he was coming to join the alliance and fight.
Let us not forget that Marco is actually fighting King right now, so you are talking about something that may happen while I'm talking about something that is already happening, that's the difference.

The only other times you've seen non-strawhats defeat main villains is:

A) when a main character of an arc does it because they are central to the plot (Wiper/Kyros)

B) when there aren't enough strawhats to fight the main villains (Strawhat fleet/Dressrosa)

Marco fills none of these roles because there are enough Strawhats to fight the Beast Pirates and he's not a main character this arc. Realize that slowly but surely every Beast Pirate is solely being paired with strawhats. This chapter should prove to you this is becoming the case

Wait, what’s his connection to Usopp?? It was Sanji who took care of him before their fight, and I doubt Shanks cares enough about the chef he’s never met to spare Gin for that reason alone. Maybe he joined the Red Haired Pirates after Krieg was captured (?) or died (???), that would make more sense to me.
