Freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom from consequences.
then its not free speech anymore.
if you get a mob on your ass for saying something controversial you are not really free to voice your opinion anymore.
thats the problem with this.
free speech is only free speech if it has no other consequences than people disagreeing with you.
losing ones job over a statement is the opposite of free speech.
the bigger problem is on who controls what is right or what is wrong.
people get cancelled on the internet by people already on the internet. often on sites that heavily censor some opinions already.
internet opinion is not equvivalent to prevalent opinion.
say that you dislike homosexuality on reddit and they blow your account appart. say you dislike homosexuality in your local pub and not much will happen.
hatespeech is only meant to silence unpleasant opinions. it may have had a purpose once. now its just misused.
you will only notice this if you are on the other side. this is the scary part. people supporting the suppression of free speech are okay with it because they do not approve of the opinions that are suppressed. what these people fail to understand is that silencing someone does not make their opinion go away. it only frustrates them. this creates tension. this creates actual threat to a nation.
western countries are currently heading towards hard cencorship.
I endorse ACTUAL free speech. I want to know what people are really like, what their opinions really are.
then I can make my mind up about them and move on.
any form of cencorship or inhibition of free speech is disgusting. and I really mean ANY.
having said that.
this is the reason governments hate decentralized communication. they can not control it.
because they are collectively fucked when people realize that they are not alone with their opinion.
The Holocaust is not a "theory" you can discuss about, it’s a tragic fact.
which other fact are you not allowed to do research on or call into question?
can you get into jail for saying that the earth is flat? this is the problem people have with it.
if research was allowed then conspiracy theories would die off. otherwise you only fuel them.
