It goes both ways as well. Marco defeating King was out of the option from the start but Marco, albeit nerfed, failed to even push King into hybrid and didn't even damage him significantly.

If he did it would lessen the impact when Zoro would do it.

Marco was just never meant to defeat King or Queen bcs those two were for Zoro and Sanji.

Marco was just a plot device to keep them busy

Queen was using Hybrid against base Sanji like 10 minutes after the beginning of his fight. Oda just wanted to show the hybrid design for the SH fight.
