I think Oda was saying these are the second most important members on the captains ship, because pirate crews are sometimes different. That being said Zoro is the vice captain and plays the 1b or #2 role in the crew. Same for Rayleigh and Ben, but different for Marco and Katakuri etc. Oden was stronger than Marco but Marco was giving a higher rank because of seniority.

Are you blind or something? I am stating to you that is the main prerequisite for being a vice captain (strength) not tenure.

Infact zoro is the only subordinate that luffy looked for solely based on strength since he specifically looked for zoro the pirate hunter
I am stating that you are not a vice captain unless the author of the manga makes it clear like he did for other characters like Rayleigh and beckman so people would not be speculating

The author made it clear when he

1. Made the rank being a direct correlation to one's strength and character

2. Made the position have little to do with tenure

Which is why when whitebeard died the elders talked about marco maybe posing a threat to blackbeard.

Which is why oda made it clear that Ben Beckman has a bounty close to Shanks

Which is why he made it clear that the only person highlighted as being with kaido as he approached Shanks before heading to marine Ford was king

Which is why Kat was the one order to watch the banquet and is also why the other bigmom siblings revere Kat as the brother that doesn't lose. And which is also why the other bigmom children in wano deduced that Kat would be in command had bigmom perished

If a crew/org has both a chief of staff and a first mate who would have more authority. Are they on equal footing in terms of hierarchial power?
Like in Buggy's crew. Who has more authority btwn Cabaji and Mohji?
Equal.
Just like Zoro and Sanji.
Zoro is the First mate, Sanji the advisor (according to vivrecard) just like Vito for Bege (who was present in the concept of the draw), Sabo and Laffite.

It's over. Zoro is officially confirmed as right hand/vice captain/first mate or whatever you want to call the 2nd strongest in a group.
This was rather obvious, there is a shit ton of feats and portrayal from manga and databooks that are clear proof. A good 90% of people have always been sure of that, only a small minority dared to argue against the blatant evidence.
But now it's literally undesputable. Thankfully, Oda killed any remaining argument.

These characters (Marco, Shiryu, Ben Beckman, Rayleigh, Katakuri, King, Sabo, Killer, Bepo, Zoro) have nothing in common for Oda to put them together as if there was a precise reason.
Nothing in common; bar a single thing.
Being the obvious 2nds strongest/right hands/vice captain/first mates of their crews and groups.

The One Piece official account textually stated that Zoro and co are the Number Twos of their crews/groups.

It's time to face a simple reality: no mindfuckery and bullshit about roles (Zoro and Killer are listed as "fighters" but they clearly act as vice captains/right hands), or about relationships (Shiryu joined the crew later than other characters), or about age (Katakuri being younger than Perospero).

This is a shonen and Oda makes things easy. Strength means hierarchy. Hierarchy is because of strength. The strongest is the leader and the captain. The 2nd strongest is the right hand of the captain and factually acts as vice captain. Then there's the rest of the crew.

The only difference is between right hands/2nds that are very close to the captain and almost as strong as him (Rayleigh to Roger, Zoro to Luffy, Ben to Shanks, Killer to Kidd) and right hands/2nds that while stronger than anyone else in the crew are not that close to the captain (King to Kaido, Katakuri to Big Mom, Marco to Whitebeard).

The beginning draft of the cover shows Oda's intent maybe even better than the final one: all characters are drew in the same way, and to Marco, Shiryu, Ben Beckman, Rayleigh, Katakuri, King, Sabo, Killer, Bepo and Zoro there are also added Mr 1 (Crocodile's right hand) and Vito (Capone's right hand).
Again, all these characters have nothing in common bar the most obvious thing: being the 2nd strongest in their respective crew/group.

Where are you getting this "second strongest" concept from?

Shiryu>Blackbeard, even when we look at pre-ts
Zoro>Luffy
Rayleigh=Roger

This thread is just about the number 2s. The person in charge/who leads in absence of the captain.

Most of these guys aren't vice captains. And only one is a first mate. Most of these are just right-hands.
