Lol I hope Hayumi’s scum because either way that’s basically a scum confirmation to me on Lanji. He didn’t even try to argue for me or Dest to go even tho he scum read us the most and he didn’t try to argue against a Town read of his.
Mogi looked around the mostly-empty investigation headquarters. They were already the last bastion against Kira, and now that was all but washed-up too. He looked over to Ukita, who was finishing up for the day, though it was already late into the evening. Then his head turned to Mikami, a credible prosecutor who had been staunchly anti-Kira.
And lastly...
He looked towards L. L and his girlfriend had been there from the start, though with his father a recent victim, he was understandably very distant. As Mogi absorbed the scenary, he couldn't help but feel melancholic. Like the end was near. Like
They would never return to this room again.
Just silly superstition, he laughed to himself derisively. This had been their daily routine for many years by now, so the thoughts of it all changing suddenly seemed somehow less realistic than them breaking through with the Kira case, of which had become their life's work.
L and his girlfriend, well, his fiance now - a popular idol who often came to the investigation HQ to serve as a morale boost, and then eventually ended up staying here everyday, got up to leave.
And the feeling pulsed within Mogi. It just... something wasn't quite right.
As they were at the door, Mogi called out.
"Hey, L? No.. Light?"
The young, yet brilliant son of their former leader, turned his head around. It was then that Mogi was aware of the torrential downpour going on outside. The rain crashed against the windows so loud, Mogi couldn't even hear his reply. With L looking at him inquisitively, Mogi figured out at least his reponse encouraged him to continue speaking. But yet, he had nothing to say.
"No, it's nothing. Take care on your way back. And you, Misa-Misa."
Light didn't make much of a response, and left the room. After making a cutesy pose, his partner followed him.
Mogi reclined back in his chair. He noticed both Ukita and Mikami were looking at him. And then he saw their faces.
Words did not need to be said. In that moment, they knew. They knew. It was impossible - how could they suspect those two? But it was too late anyway. They saw their car drive off, and then they were gone from sight.
The truth would never be spoken. With a sense of mutual respect between them, the three men left in silence. Mogi took one last look around the room that had essentially served as his home away from home. Regret would be understandable. Having your life's work amount to failure, with the culprit being right under your nose the whole time would be shameful for any police officer. But, none of that mattered right now. Mogi instead thought of his family. When he gets home, he'll tell his wife he loves her. He'll hold his daughter close, and tell her to never join the police force. And then, he'll spend what time he has just absorbing his family's love.
Yeah. But first, he needs a beer. He caught up with Mikami and Ukita. Apparently, they all had the same idea.
Later that night, Teru Mikami, Kanzo Mogi and Hirokazu Ukita all passed away.
All three died of a heart attack.
Dragoban, Teru Mikami, a Town Vanilla was killed.
Dr_Professor83, Hirokazu Ukita, a Town Vanilla was endgamed.
Destroya, Kanzo Mogi, a Town Vanilla was endgamed.
Mere weeks later, the investigation HQ were shut down. L formally resigned from the Kira case, citing personal fears for his safety. With the news that L had given up, several other institutes around the world began to follow suit. If L couldn't solve the case, then what chance did they have?
With the investigations into Kira failing, and the weeks turning into months, the political sphere soon followed suit. There wasn't any political advantage to opposing Kira any longer, and those who did often ended up dead anyway. In fact, it was becoming advantageous to support Kira, as Pro-Kira movements continued to gather momentum. The youth generally supported Kira, the elderly were mostly apathetic, and even the middle-aged were coming around, mostly out of fear. Kira killed bad people. Therefore, if Kira killed someone, they must have been a bad person. Therefore, if Kira killed people who went after Him, then the act of going after him must be a bad thing to do. That was the consensus that was built up.
Kira's world had been born. Those that once resisted bitterly accepted that it was far too late. Nothing worked. A killer that can kill from anywhere, and needs only a name and a face...
There was a rumour, that one of the investigators that worked with L was actually Kira. It was said that L himself had believed that. Conspiracy theories like so often popped up now and then. But they were just nonsense. If L was forced into giving up, then they simply had no hope left.
Really, was it even possible to catch Kira?
