Now that i read the french version of the chapter(lucky me that i can speak/read french 
), it's pretty clear the portrayal was around the fact that
- Kaido was fearing Wano's military's power
- Used the 5years timespan to reduce Oden's military power while increasing his own
- Oden only had his 11 scabbards vs Kaido's army
- The hostage tactic was part of Kaido's plan and Oden was even stronger than Kaido expected, with Oden almost beating Kaido if not for the hostage moment
The ending is predictable as well, with Oden managing to save the scabbards while boiling alone

ODEN isn't type of fighters like BM kaido Shiki who are cold hearted powerful pirates
He is the kind powerful pirates as Roger and WB.

why then Kaido and Orochi will be taken by surprise now they are sure that no one would be able to arrive there and the communictation are cut so the traitor will not be able to notify them either , and more than that the alliance are gonna bigger than they think since i am pretty sure the grand fleet is gonna come and the 1000 people in the capital as well , so about 10000 will go to Onigashima

and I know the "Oden almost beating Kaido" is your own intrepertation of the panels. Kaido was down, Oden was about to attack him again. thats pretty much why u think he would've won.
