He is ambiguous in the sense that what puts him on the enemy side of the strawhats is that he was saved by the wrong guy (Kaido) and hence idolized him as the new Joyboy and put all his hopes in Kaido.

Remember what Law and Kidd have done in the past. They are not 'good guys' either but Law atthis point is something like an honorary strawhat.
