But Luffy is the one being able to awaken it after 800 years so he at least gets the credit of the only one capable of figuring out / maxing out his effort thus awakening an excalibur-style fruit

Oda either screwed up the long term foreshadowing or came up with the idea last minute in Wano

Remember how before Wano began, Oda had some message about how he didnt know how Luffy would beat Kaido? I think this is basically the “solution” he worked out, I just can’t really see this reveal/retcon as something he had in his backpocket the entire time
