That's part of the problem though. Oda has now indicated that it actually wasn't just rubber with Kaido saying "rubber shouldn't do that." He's trying to change it fundamentally.
Yeah, I think tbf there was also a comment from Doflamingo but for all of the ridiculous DF applications, we literally just had King stretch his own neck like rubber. Why even bother to draw a line in the sand?

Instead of jamming in the "secret name" shit they could have just said something like Nika might have had the Gomu fruit. Because introducing your own myth is kind of cheap.

This is the greatest One Piece chapter in history. There is not an ability more fitting for any character in any medium than Luffy's ability to affect the world around him like a cartoon. I was so happy reading this because this is Luffy at his purest form. He's cackling like a loon while slinging Kaido around like he's in the Loony Tunes (Kaido's face with his tongue sticking out was hilarious).

Kaido is clearly in for a rude awakening (intentional/unintentional pun). As Kaido told the scabbards, "Death completes a person," and he completed Luffy. Now lay in that bed.

The reaction to Luffy getting up was classic. Everybody with sheer surprise, and poor Nami (but a great reaction from her) and Tama, or Kid and Law and Sanji and Hyou and Marco being like "wtf." Kaido actually fearing what he felt on the roof...

Hiyori's part was greaf, but it was completely overshadowed, and rightfully so.

Also, for the stuff down the road, the Teach confrontation just got more interesting. He killed Ace (or was the reason for his death), who he called the sun, but now little brother.is coming for that ass as the Sun God, with possibly a counter to Whitebeard's fruit (is it really going to effect rubber that much?).

And there's going to be a bunch of butthurt theorists thay are going to go for the low effort "chosen one" garbage thinking they're hyper intelligent with their "but he was fated to do it," except that Luffy isn't here without the choices he made. If he chooses to be anything other than what he chose to be - none of this happens regardless. There's a reason fate and freedom are mentioned at the beginning of the series - they're not exclusive. You get what you choose to be.

And, for the rest that are going to cry about the World Government, don't even start about how they supposedly didn't go after him. Smoker was after him in Alabasta and they sent Hina and a blockade after him. They sent Garp after him in W7, while Aokiji was right there. They sent Kuma after him. They sent Kizaru and the Pacifista after him, and Kuma showed up again. They left him to the devices of Magellan, a prison warden so effective that the prison he guarded had seen a breakout *one* time inits history. They sent all three admirals after him, and every vice admiral, *and* Garp and Sengoku joined in. Smoker was after him in PH, and they sent Fujitora to aid a Warlord in Dressrosa. They sent a CP0 agent after him, thereby risking the wrath of one of the five stronest people in the world (the other three Yonko and Dragon) to kill him during that fight. Go home with the lame, mindless hate.

This was an excellent chapter, and like I said, the best chapter in the series. I can not wait for this next chapter. This fight went from great to epic in one chapter. Bravo, Oda. The best to do it, with the best main character of all time.

It isn't inherently cheap if its done right

but it wasn't.

Imagine training from childhood in wild life full of beasts since your grandpa threw you everytime, forcing you to adapt to every ambush, every combat pattern of various feral beast. Only to get a fruit that equip you with rubber body. An inefficient and sloppy fruit in combat. Imagine honing such an ability again and again in a battle against nature, until your mastery breaks the limits of what rubber can ever do in combat, creating four gears of harmonization with your own anatomical systems to produce maximum combat effect. That brings you to be worthy in an actual serious match, against The World's Strongest creature that uses a dragon fruit. Imagine evenly matching a dragon with rubber, literally no one else will ever dream of accomplishing that!

Imagine breaking through so far, so that your skills are able to finally awaken the actual potential of that fruit which never awakened in hundreds of years. Finally, THE ONLY fruit which is WORTHY of YOUR ever-expanding creative approach in combat. No wonder God Nika is moved by your will and finally decide to awaken after such a long slumber, since no one else but YOU, can even dream of being WORTHY of a godly Devil Fruit that sets YOUR OWN IMAGINATION AS THE LIMITS, AND GIVE YOU FREEDOM IN COMBAT.

Cheers for the two kindred spirits that finally find each other in the borders of life and death, Hito Hito no Mi Model: Nika and Monkey D. Luffy. Only you guys are worthy of being each other's lifetime partner. Cheers to the best rewards of every second of struggle, limitless imagination, and unending perseverence.

LET US CROWN THE SUPREME GOD OF LIBERATION !!!!!!!

It is Rubber, it's just Toon Rubber. You can see by the sound effects
Again, it's still a fundamental change because regular rubber doesn't reflect fire. His other actions indicate he's doing more than change things into rubber by making eyes completely pop out of heads and have stars show up to indicate a concussion.
Post automatically merged:

Why? Why wouldn't it be rubber? We saw Luffy tank a lot of attacks that rubber shouldn't handle but yet it did. The fact that Luffy is doing it, the stretching of the ground and bouncing back the attacks points towards the simplest explanation which is rubber since Luffy is still rubber human
Can you remember a single moment when Luffy reflected fire? Like when Big Mom used her fire ball attacks on Kidd, Law & Luffy...did it bounce off Luffy while only affecting the others? Or when Luffy waded through Boro Breath with "guts!" or got pushed all the way through Onigashima instead of reflecting it?

Also, for the stuff down the road, the Teach confrontation just got more interesting. This is an excellent point--Luffy will be resistant to both darkness and earthquakes. It'll be interesting to see if Teach gets a zoan ability. At this point, would Teach be able to defend against Nika Luffy?

They probably thought the fruit was harmless before the awakening (which, to be fair, kinda was. Even Ace roasted Luffy about it), then Imu (probably) told them the fruit was about to awaken and they decide to act.

We don't even know if the Gorosei are aware of the JoyBoy-Nika-Raftel conection.
Still makes no sense. They had it guarded by a Cipher Pol prodigy and punished him severely for losing it, so they clearly didn't think it was harmless. As long as the user lives the possibility is always there...and Luffy is the absolute worst person in the world to have it!

He combines aspects of the single worst individuals in WG history! He's the son of the Worst Criminal, Dragon...inspired by the Pirate King Gol D. Roger, wearing his straw hat...had the greatest pirate of the previous era Whitebeard place his faith in him...and he shouted to the world on global TV that he was going to become Pirate King at Marineford! He's one of the top members of the "Worst Generation" as well.
On top of all that, Imu clealrly recognized the Ancient Weapon Poseidon was reborn with her picture in hand. It would take mindboggling levels of insanity to ignore all that.

Also, the Gorosei not knowing how to do their job is a problem in and of itself. How can they prevent Joyboy's return and the collapse of the WG if the most basic info is kept from them? That would still be massive incompetence. They clearly know the importance of Raftel when they had Professor Clover shot in the Ohara flashback for mentioning it, and razed the island to the ground for good measure. Just mentioning Nika gets you disappeared like the guard who spoke to Who's Who.

While Oda absouletly could've done a much better job that he did establishing Nika and his legend, it's something that wasn't hinted at at all.

The first mention of the Sun God goes as far back as Skypiea arc. The same arc with one of Oda's most favourite panel (Dancing Wolves one). The Sun God was mentioned again in Big Mom's flashback in Elbaf. Two seemingly unconnected civilizations believing in the same God.

The Sun symbol appears many times in the story with the Sun Pirates who seems to know about Nika as evident in Who's Who and Jinbei's dialogue.

Interestingly, Alabasta's flag is... a sun.

The Symbol of the Kozuki also has a Sun inside the Crane.

And if Joyboy = Nika (and Nika isn't actually older than Joyboy) then that also adds tons of mention to the legend.

Interesting thing, Enel the False God (same arc when Sun God was first mentioned) was fascinated and wanted to reach the Moon

Again, I retaliate. Oda could've done a much better job adding obvious hints, but it's also false to say it didn't exist before.

Exactly. I really don't get why Oda decided all of a sudden now that rubber shouldn't do the things Luffy is doing when that applies to a myriad of different characters' abilities. How the hell does Kinemon create fire out of thin air? Swords shouldn't do that. How does kicking the air make people fly? Or a Triceratops spinning its frills? Goofy abilities are par for the course for One Piece, so saying "this shouldn't do that" is just really funny when you think about it. It's just an attempt to justify a sudden retcon.
