Break Week Does Japan hate Wano

#8
I really wouldn't know the general sentiment, but I feel like Oda is probably more respected amongst Japanese fans

As an American, I'm largely shifting my focus since I'm almost caught up to Golden Wind and volume 5 is set to take fist of the north star past all the boring filler.

I have heard this claim be thrown around but is there any truth to it besides the declining volume sales?
This is your answer.
In general, Wano is liking it in Japan and I would tell you that it was from Japan.

The decrease in sales is not because they don't like it, but because most people are up to date with the manga. About 90% of One Piece's sales come from new volumes, something that contrasts with Kimetsu, JJK... If you look at the sales for recently published volumes, you will realize that One Piece remains up.

Which is normal, because it is not the same to buy 20-25 volumes to complete a story, which will be about $150, compared to +100, which is +$800. Not to mention that having 25 volumes at home is not the same as having more than 100. Japanese houses are small. Many prefer to have 5-6 works than just one.

Which leads us to the fact that surely a good part of One Piece's sales have been transferred to the digital format. Sales not counted in Oricon surveys.

A lot of "I think" information to explain the sales dropping.

I will agree about KNY and JJK since the WORLD discovered after the anime. KNY as a finished work soon enough will stop being top selling manga of the year. JJK(I guess it is in hiatus) will soon enough reach normal levels like what One Piece was during all those years.
But we have other manga that overcame One Piece, and if I'm correct one of them doesn't even have anime(Chainsaw Man). So people nowadays rather other manga than One Piece.

No only other manga but One Piece itself sales declines. Is too easy to say overall One Piece reader is up to manga so they buy online. But you don't explain the ones who buys manga at store or whatever. You argument that 90% of year sales are about new volumes but that just mean One Piece doesn't have new readers only old ones while other manga are attracting new readers to them.

One Piece peak sale was at Fishman Island when community like to say it was the worst arc of timeskip. But the "peak arc" is actually the one with worst sales.

I see you're not very into this topic. Before speaking and giving opinions, I think it is good to obtain information. In this case I am not talking about theories, if not facts.

Precisely, Fishman Island is where most people caught up, myself included. And precisely that makes the pace of the New World seem slow, because people were not used to reading a chapter a week and on top of that, there were hardly any breaks at that time.

It is true that One Piece does not attract so many new audiences, but also, the audience it attracts is not reflected in sales.

A large part of the new public of One Piece buys the digital version, both because it is cheaper and because of the lack of space. And those who buy the printed version, buy the Boxing, which does not count in Oricon sales either.

I tell you again that you compare the sale of the last volumes only and not the global sales, you will realize that One Piece is still the best seller. And that without taking into account that even without being able to see the data, I am very sure that One Piece is the queen of digital sales.

I guarantee you, that today One Piece is still the best-selling manga, both in volumes and in Merchandising.

Facts? Give me sources then.

Where is the source that fishman island is where most readers catch up? And we are mainly talking about Japanese people since all that sales information is about them.

Where is the source of digital sales? To say new public buy digital and not physical?

Where is the source of box sales?

You even say that you are not seeing data but want to speak about facts. This is your opinion.

I'm comparing last volumes only and not global sales? What? My argument is that sales are dropping. The sales information is about Japan physical ones. You are bringing data that you can only speculate into this debate. Show me your sources.

There are no metric that details digital sales so stop assuming. From physical volume sales One Piece has been on a decline for years now and it will continue to decline.

  1. Jujutsu Kaisen (volume 18) – 2,011,232 copies sold
  2. One Piece (volume 101) – 1,793,360 copies sold
  3. Jujutsu Kaisen (volume 19) – 1,608,811 copies sold
  4. One Piece (volume 102) – 1,605,641 copies sold
  5. Spy x Family (volume 9) – 1,232,036 copies sold
  6. Tokyo Revengers (volume 25) – 1,126,893 copies sold
  7. Tokyo Revengers (volume 26) – 997,857 copies sold
  8. Tokyo Revengers (volume 27) – 835,721 copies sold
  9. My Hero Academia (volume 33) – 790,901 copies sold
  10. Kaiju No. 8 (Volume 5) – 784,760 copies sold
In sales for the last volumes, you will be able to verify that only JJK surpasses One Piece and Spy X Family is close, it will probably surpass them at the end of the year thanks to the anaime of both.

As you said, I can't give you data on Boxing Set sales and digital sales because they don't exist, but I can give you objective data and you should draw your conclusions. Let's do a little exercise: imagine that you are a Japanese boy, 14-15 years old, you live in a small house, you have no income and you are interested in One Piece.

  • From where would you get +800$ to buy the complete series?
  • Would you prefer to buy the series volume by volume or would you prefer the cheaper Boxing sets?
  • If you hardly have space, would you buy a series of +100 or would you prefer a digital version that barely takes up?
  • If you have to choose between having 1 complete physical manga or having 6-7, which would you prefer
Apart from these issues, what I can tell you is that digital sales grow year after year and manga with more volumes are more affected by the reasons mentioned above.

And all this without taking into account that many of the new followers of One Piece, are children of One Piece fabs and already have the manga, they do not need to buy it.

Do not be influenced by your opinion and let's be impartial.

Again, there is no metric for digital sales so stop assuming. We can create thousands of exercises but they are still uneducated assumptions. One Piece current sales per volume is on pace to be less than last year.

Here is a chart of 2021 and prior year sales: https://www.reddit.com/r/OnePiece/comments/r5lveu
