When the school needed a new principal, he and a few other teachers applied for the spot but in the end an external new guy was hired as principal.

My advice: don't do anything like that.
Don't enter administration. The kids need good guys (like you) as their actual teacher / class tutor, not some well-meaning but absent background figure.
