Praise Sakazuki, finally a good Bleach arc! I just finished chapter 70, and the Soul Society training arc was the first arc of this manga that I could not stop reading and actually wanted to turn the page and find out what was going to happen next. I think it just goes to show how powerful a competent antagonist (Byakuya), a competent enough training arc with a clearly explained magic system, and actual stakes and tension (Ichigo getting bodied left and right) can take an arc that is clearly just a setup for the bigger soul society which I have now reached (thank all that is holy). I do have some gripes though:
1. Titty drew way too many panty/up skirt shots of that young chick who works for Kisuke, that shit was weird as fuck and extremely off putting, no clue who he even thought he was pandering to there other than literal sexual predators.
2. This arc seemed like Titty was making up for lost time, it feels like he should’ve explained many of the mechanics of his power system long before now and we are now simply making up for lost ground. Which is fine albeit noticeable.
3. The Soul Society looks to be pretty bland. I was hoping for a more abstract realm full of strange otherworldly architecture but from what I saw, it just looks like medieval Japan lol..
But that’s really it, I can suspend my disbelief enough to not ask why exactly Zanpaku To’s manifest the way they do, or what exactly a Soul Reaper is and why exactly that power was dormant in Ichigo and all that stuff enough to just go with it. Otherwise here is what I actually liked about this arc:
1. Byakuya. He wasn’t amazing but for some reason he came off as extremely intimidating to me when he first showed up behind RUkia, and him begging Ichigo reinforced that. I also really liked his exchange with Kenpachi
Kenpachi: “Want to test me?”
Byakuya: “Do you want to be tested?”
I laughed out loud as that was a great line.
Like I said, definitely not an amazing villain or character but truly the first Bleach villain who even felt like a remote threat and followed through. I haven’t seen many people bring him up online so I assume Titty fucks him up lol.
2. The training arcs for all characters were handled well, mainly Ichigo. For the first time Ichigo didn’t seem to me like some messiah child as Titty had been portraying him up until now, but he actually had a lot of genuine struggles and low points to overcome this arc. Which is great.
3. This arc actually felt like it was building up to a bigger plot line, which is once again a first for Bleach. It’s a shame I had to slog through 50 chapters of mostly trash to get here but here we are. For me this was a solid B tier arc. Finally I’m excited to continue reading this series! Lol
