General & Others One Piece Criticism : Valid or Overblown ?

Also, just to show you something about WHY THIS CRITICISM is deserved.... Let's look at Reverie event....

The reverie:
1- Hyped as hell
2- The moment where Dragon will DECLARE WAR on WG/Celestial Dragons....EVEN HE SAID SO with Sabo before the event...
3- Oda cuts away from it.... and we return AFTER the event is finished...
4- We only here small hints or news of chaos happening
5- The WORST PART... Dragon did not show up at Reverie

Like this is a well-deserved "Fuck you" from us fans to Oda... and you cannot convince me otherwise!

EVEN ODA HIMSELF on several interviews hinted at Dragon doing something... and even said "The hot topic of Reverie will be Luffy and Dragon"

What did we get from reverie??? well, we had some princesses fangirling over Luffy... that's what we really got!

And once again... Oda does what I stated before:
1- He hypes something
2- Cuts away... while teasing us about what really happened (which is Big News Morgan Shocking News)
3- He stays away for TOO LONG until plot of current story becomes too imprtant and heated to go back there...
4- Once he got back there... Well, Dragon didn't do fucking shit... and Sabo.. who knows what happened.. we can just assume he is not having best time.. or framed or something...

5- He cuts away... slowly... people are losing interest... and Sabo appears out of nowhere in different island safe explaining what happened when there IS NO FUCKING TENSION sorrounding him...

That's the fucking problem... I don't need Sabo telling me the story when HE IS SAFE... when we know he is SAFE... I want to see him in PRESENT TIME... to be at tension about whether he will survive... be in problem... etc... to feel those emotions.... not fucking Sabo chilling.. telling us a story where no tension is there anymore!

And Dragon?? yeah... what a great center of the topic he was! He really shined brightly.... by having Okama make up I would say

Oda rides on the coattails of gags, when he shouldn't. Some gags have overstayed their welcome but the dude can't left go, cant have his characters develop. I wouldn't of minded a character development of Luffy becoming more aware of his actions effecting not just him and his crew but eventually the entire world, has he even stopped and wondered what it would mean to have another Pirate King? Good or bad changes... or is he going to continue the childish dream of PK just means he's free?
Or Usopp actually becoming Brave only to cause an accident hurting someone in the crew.... among other ways to make character development.... just examples... instead they feel alot less like characters and just empty souless robots with one or two traits.
Yeah..... Sanji gag is being overused to extreme....
Don't get me wrong... I love Sanji... and I enjoy the perverted gag... BUT WHEN IT IS FUCKING DONE IN RIGHT WAY...RIGHT TIMING

But Oda has been for using it with Sanji almost EVERYTIME he appears on the screen.... so the fun part about being perverted... where it shows up in an unexpected situation to make us laugh... it's no longer there!

For example, a good timing for perverted Sanji is when Nami in bathhouse --- combined with Sanji using stealth black to be invisible... Sanji and Drake falling from seeing naked woman.. PERFECT timing

But for example, last chapter the Tank scene... it was fucking unnecessary and annoying...

Brook's "can I see your panty?" have lessened THANKFULLY... and I like the carefree Brook joke he did with Franky las chapter... Oda has an annoying habit of sticking to the same comedy gag over and over instead of using different comedy ideas... or AT LEAST... if he doesn't have new ideas for comedy... AT LEAST he should use those gags in the RIGHT TIME... when all things combined can make sense.... overusing the same joke EVEN when it shouldn't happen is gonna make things annoying and boring

Oda constantly builds up an event as being dire but floods it with comedy, clashing with the previously established tone. It rapidly slips back n' forth between them.

Looks like current one piece is not for everyone after all. You can tell there is a lot of anger in some of those responses, obviously frustration got the better of them and they started to hate everything Oda writes and exaggeratve the negative points and make it seem like its all what one piece is now.
If they truly hate everything Oda does they wouldnt be here and would never talk about the things they like. Responses like this is also part of the problem.

I think Fairy Tail is complete trash but if I hated it or found no enjoyment from it, I wouldn't have wasted my time reading into the end. I would have dropped it like the other mangas I disliked.

Anger and frustration comes from Passion... it's not that we hate One Piece... It's just we hate the DIRECTION the series is going for! Because we fell in love in a series that had our expectations MET in the past... and even surpassed our own expectations... where the bar was set too high!
So when we as viewers starts to feel that WE AS AMATEURS who are NOT WRITERS... believe that we could have handled certain characters/arc ending IN BETTER WAY than Oda... where Oda's destination in the arc... DIDN'T EVEN COME CLOSE to the hype we all thought it would at least reach... that's the problem... it's out of love for the show that we enjoyed for many years and because we want it to end each and every arc in the MOST spectacular way

This is not because we hate Oda or hate the series... If I hate Oda or the series.. I wouldn't even watch this show or read it.... I'm not like the people who watch Fairy Tail just to shit on it... I have seen 12 episodes... I saw it was not my taste... I stopped.. as simple as that and I don't talk about it generally... same with other series... But One Piece... I want a BETTER Quality.. and I think fans who stuck with it for years deserve BETTER writing than what we are getting now

I speak about those who only talk negatively about one piece and Oda, not once or twice but always and I can give names of those people.

I understand completly what you're saying, but there is those who only point out the negative and speak too much of it as its the only thing in every chapter. And if they can't find it they make up one to rant about it.

Also, good scenario for certain events is subjectives and what you find a good scneario others won't.

Oda makes mistakes but he also didn't promise to make every headcanon come true. Like everyone has soemthing he likes it to happen but that's just what that individual wants not what Oda thinks is better the overall plot. So when that individual thinks that the direction Oda took was wrong, why do think then that you or me or anyone else would better and meets everyone's taste. This is why I say its subjective.

Sure off panelling is bad when you're looking forward for certain events but then again why do you think its important to the overall story which is what Oda focuses on most of the time not on certain events that witnessing it live won't matter that much.

Overall, you absolutely have every right to criticize Oda and I might even agree on certain things you said but the overall feeling I get from not just you but others too that the current one piece (Post timeskip that is) isn't enjoyable as it is to me and others who still enjoy the current one piece like it did before the timeskip

What's most important is how you convey your criticisms. You can have a particularly scathing evaluation, but if it's not well articulated, how is anyone expected to take it seriously? This can even apply to praise. If it's hollow and non-descript, it'll only get a passing glance.

One Piece has its flaws, any piece of fiction does. What matters is whether the positives outweigh them for you. Oda is excellent at setting up his plotlines and characters. Just look at how popular the F6 grew in just two chapters. And the run on plots have been strong enough to keep people's interest even during the story's obvious lulls.

I think where he's started to stumble is how to juggle all these plots. There are so many characters and so many run on plots that some of them are bound to be unsatisfying. Look to Wano as a microsom of this. Many plot lines, such as Ashura's anger and depression, Denjiro's Kyoshiro guise, the Ushimitsu Kozo, the events that led to Oden's imprisonment, Zoro's Shusui plot, etc., they were so hastily wrapped up in order to make room for other storylines. These are done to accommodate for quicker pacing, but it makes the storytelling feel mechanical as every plot feels like a checkbox needing to be filled.

I dont think fans getting older is the problem, given how diverse the opinions and ages are. I still find some of the gags funny like recent chapters with Jinbe.
I dont know why you think fans getting older is not a problem.

One Piece is a manga written for 15 year olds. A teenager who started to read this manga from Fishman Island or Punk Hazard is now in his late 20s. A decade is a long time for a person to change his taste in tv series, music or movies. I know many people who dont enjoy superhero movies as they used to 7-8 years back. Another example, in the same decade of post-timeskip, we got game of thrones, which totally set a new standard for shock value or violence. Extreme violence and gore in a tv series dont really surprise us anymore. Even cartoons like Rick and Morty relies on gore.

I am not saying Oda should change his manga for older audience or turn it into a Berserk type seinen. But when we see Pound coming back to life or Luffy having a picnic in Kaido's territory, I feel some of the criticisms (not all) are justified.

I'm not sure if it is.

I started in my teens and now I'm in my late 20s. But essentially One Piece has not failed to give me the same level of entertainment it used to. Some arcs less than others, but I am still fully invested. I don't expect OP to change drastically just because we are all older.

Now, of course people's taste changes with age: but I think such people stopped following in total, or should stop following, no?

There are people who thought the manga was child friendly trash when they were younger but enjoy it when they are older. Some people gain a sense of humor similar as they get older while other gain a sense of humor that deviates from Oda's style. People's taste changes more OVERTIME than with age itself. There are dumbass 30 year olds and smart 18 year olds and vice versa after all.

Its more of a combination of us getting used to Oda's habits and Oda habits not being so great in general, which some obvious changes postskip. For example, usually when Oda gives a character that dramatic long build up, those characters meet expectations no matter how minor. Jinbe and Iva are good examples. Nowadays Oda gives that treatment to goofy minor characters who don't do much like Raizo, which obviously isnt so well recieved.

Oda has overextended himself, the world he has built is too big. Pre-TS was more satisfying because world felt smaller and more attached to crew. Post-TS there are way too many characters and events happening. I just hope we get a satisfying ending.

You really spoke my mind. I started watching One piece in my late 20s as well, and my love for this manga keeps growing. I feel its a matter of preference and expectations and how you can balance it together.

To enjoy One Piece or anything in general you need to look what the writer is trying to say rather than what you feel like he should say. Then decide whether you liked what you read or not.

Of course not. There are thousands of casual fans who just follow the manga or anime and dont discuss about OP in a forum. Probably they dont criticize/praise the manga like us.

I was just saying how getting older can be problem for some people and can be reason for easily getting frustrated.

Yes, definitely. And without a doubt the New World became BIGGER in every sense, sometimes at the cost of character interactions, but it's a new world! With bigger threats and chaos, it's been forewarned the whole time!

"you need to look what the writer is trying to say rather than what you feel like he should say" - so true. I think people get too attached to their wishes and then get angry when it doesn't work out the way they like it. But this is also a sign of personal investment, so clearly One Piece is making us invested right. Hell, I was angry for years after Ace's death :lusalty:
Of course not. There are thousands of casual fans who just follow the manga or anime and dont discuss about OP in a forum. If they dont enjoy the manga at all or have started hating it, then its a different issue.

Yeah, after all this forum is like 0.000000000001 percent of people who follow OP, and we tend to dissect it. But we have to remember that the initial goal is that a 12 year old boy/girl can sit in front of the tv and enjoy it. And it being family friendly doesn't hurt either.

I think you basically invite criticism upon yourself when you trumpet about Wano ‘making Marineford look cute’ only to deliver absolute dogshit characters like Toki and unforgettable fights like Luffy vs Urashima that lasted longer than Oden vs Kaido. Don’t blow your own horn and then turn around and insult the audience when you fail abysmally at delivering your own hype.
