Also, I want to be clear, I like Egghead, just not this plotline.
The worst part is, I literally didn't have expectations for Vegapunk outside of Devil Fruit and Lineage Factor research, which has so far been interesting. Liked the Ohara stuff a lot, too.
I just wanted Vegapunk to make sense, have some fun wacky science moments, connect with Franky, and not do a lot of random shit for no reason, like so many other hyped up characters.
I mean, Shaka was watching Luffy and Zoro fight the Seraphim for how long? Does Shaka seriously not know how Lunarian flames work, despite BUILDING THE SERAPHIM?!? We're clowning on Zoro for this, Mr. Brilliant Scientist is getting attacked and like "Should I tell them how the Seraphim's defense system works? Nah." How in the hell does Vegapunk not know how to fight his own robots? What the fuck are we doing here?
Vegapunk experimented on King... what? Over two decades ago? Even ignoring how dumb it is that Vegapunk, the man who IS BUILDING A GIANT DATABASE USING HIS BRAIN BRAIN FRUIT AND WANTS TO SPREAD INFORMATION FREELY THROUGH THE WORLD, didn't know that King was a Lunarian, how in the fuck has he been experimenting with Lunarian DNA to the point he's made Lunarian CLONE CYBORGS and he can't tell Luffy and Zoro: "Oh, BTW, these guys are special and won't take damage when their flames are on. Here's when their flames turns off."
WHAT ARE WE DOING HERE?!?!?
I'm convinced Oda went through too many revisions in this arc and got lost in the sauce.
Luffy and Zoro refusing to use CoC is also ridiculous on a large amount of levels.
Franky's been ignore the entire arc except by Edison, who next bothered to ask why Franky can shoot laser beams in the first place. Man is clearly a cyborg, and Vegapunk doesn't care.
Sanji, Zoro, and Jinbei have had great moments, and I think Nami's had some good moments as well, but, overall the crew still feels too split up. Is it so much to ask for one fucking arc where the Straw Hats don't end up doing 5 different things at once??? The pacing would be sooooo much smoother if they didn't get separated at the beginning of EVERY FUCKING ARC.
That's why the outside stuff is so much more hype: look at how fast paced, crisp, and full of energy Blackbeard vs Law is. When Oda writes outside the arc, his pacing dramatically approves. Look at the Reverie.
I guess it's my fault for thinking Oda learned from the things that made Wano drag like Kaido scratching his balls my dragon deez nuts on Onigashima's rocky roof.
Straw Hats split up too much, little crew interaction. Too many characters introduced at once (Scabbards/Punks), without individual plotlines/moments to make them feel important. The story needs to tell you why you should care about the betrayal, rather than making the betrayal make sense with previous plot points and feeling earned. Important fights are offscreened completely, when we get transition and recap panels all over the place (sorry Green Bull fans).
I really wanted Egghead to learn from Wano. But, people like me need to accept the Pre-Time-Skip isn't coming back. It makes it bittersweet. Even if Carrot, Yamato, and Vivi joined like I want, would they actually feel like part of the crew, or just tacked on afterthoughts? Do I even want them to join the crew, if they get treated like Chopper and Usopp nowadays???
I'm at the point where I think there's no way Stussy can join the crew because it would be too cool and unexpected.
The end of Egghead should be great, but I'll always regret how Vegapunk was used in this arc. I hope others enjoy it, though. The designs and aesthetic in this arc are some of Oda's best work yet, I just can't take the random plot fake-outs and bizarre character decisions.
