It's because Law trying to fight Blackbeard during an Ambush where Blackbeard has limited forces actually makes sense.

Kid pulled up to Elbaf, saw Shanks was partying with Giants and his own fleet, and picked a fight.

Law fighting Blackbeard and losing is a guy in a bad situation doing his best.

Kid's defeat was entirely his own fault for challenging an overwhelmingly superior force that didn't even want to fight him.

I think that's why a lot of people like Law over Kid, and likewise Kid over Law; Law is an unlucky guy that keeps succeeding against fate, while Kid is overly ambitious and keeps getting into bad situations due to his ambition.
