More than that, it makes sense when you look at who the other ship captains are:

-1st ship: Burgess who isn't stronger than Shiryu but is probably Teach's actual first mate.
-2nd ship: Shiryu, the actual second strongest of the crew.
-3rd ship: Van Augur who probably gets a similar treatment to Burgess due to him being an OG member of the crew.
-4th ship: Pizarro, the actual third strongest of the crew.
-5th ship: Laffitte, same deal as Burgess and Augur.

The only who doesn't fit with this is Doc Q who just got screwed over and was made the captain of the 9th ship anyway lol
Zoro and Sanji are number 2 and number 4. :goyea:

He'll obviously be fighting Lafitte.

Lafitte is the only prominent member of the BB pirates who Oda has refrained from showing in a bad light other than Shiryu.
I mean the same could be said about Van Augur.
They're both probably among the most intelligent members of the crew along with Shiryu and maybe Doc Q but have abilities that lean more torwards hax/utility.

I also don't see how showing them in a bad light has anything to do with actual power.
Queen was portrayed as incredibly goofy and sometimes incompetent all throughout Wano but was clearly still the second strongest commander.

It's not hard to imagine Pizarro or Vasco just being more reckless cause they're confident in their strenght but not particularly intelligent, much like Burgess.

Think the ID prisioners will fight the newer SH and the OG Blackbeard crew will fight the OG SH from Drum Island.

Zoro and Shiryu are clearly a different Idea, as Oda probably already had in mind to make a strong swordsman to join the BBP to fight Zoro as part of the BBP plotline

No it can't - Van Augur had no haki pre-TS and BB told him to stand down vs Ace because he was effectively useless. There's nothing putting Van Augur above Burgess even.

Queen was portrayed as goofy once already established as the clear-cut no.3. So it didn't matter what he did, he was consistently shown to be no.3. It's not the same case here - neither Pizarro nor Vasco nor anyone else for that matter have any clear portrayal as no.3. Thus, small details such as their treatment by Oda mean much more at this stage, as we need to take clues based on scarce information.

And Laffitte did?
I just don't see how a lack of "being shown in a bad light", something that might not even be important as there's plenty of characters who get pummeled to hype other characters (Like Kuzan in the latest chapter), would somehow be that relevant to determining Sanji's opponent.

From his build to his feats being about stealth and hypnotic abilities to him being the crew's navigator, nothing points to Laffitte being particularly strong. Burgess would be more likely than him tbh
