What this could mean is that turning any graded sword into a black sword will always make a supreme grade sword, Shusui might have been a non grade sword that jumped to great grade after turning black.

My headcannon was it turning black in wano and after zoro slayed kaido it sat next to shusui as he got the nidai upgrade… guess it could still happen in a way if we go back to wano
