The most realistic answer is that Oda fucked up with remembering Whitebeard‘s scars, or remembering the line with Shanks, whether he got them from Roger, Garling, or whoever.

In the flashback of Roger’s last meeting with Whitebeard it doesn’t look like Whitebeard has any of his three distinctive scars. The sake bowl might be blocking the central one.

It could also be like the Shanks’ scar situation where Shanks’ has apparently got tons but we only really see the one from Blackbeard. Poorly done from Oda if that’s the case.

I think Oda forgot that he had Whitebeard mention his scars to Shanks.

Shanks also talked about his homeland when he was in the Grandline his entire life

That’s not really a problem. We don’t actually know what Roger did between him picking up Shanks and then us seeing Shanks at his youngest other than God’s Valley, which would not have taken years.

For all we know they went to West Blue for a bit, made an island their base, sailed from there for a couple of years while Shanks and Buggy grew up then hit the Grand Line again when Shanks was a bit older.

This means whitebeard didn’t get any scars from roger either since that was their last clash and he didn’t get any scars from that.

So either whitebeard got scarred from a nobody or oda thought whitebeards shirt was enough to cover them

During the flashback with roger, whitebeard has no scars, so him getting scarred by garling in valley can't happen unless oda retcons it

Why would garling fight wb and wouldn't his crew know about this, since wb stays with his crew?
Uh.

God's Valley?

But aside that.

Man.

We are in the fucking era of retcons for One Piece.

Any of you seriously think Oda has this mfking shit planned all along? Lmfao.

He will speedread and see where he could possibly tie something and call it a day.

This fandom has a weird obsession with inserting their headcannon into the story and expecting Oda to follow through with it lol

Also, this is the last time we see prime WB and the sake cup is blocking his chest scars

He got them after God Valley and Roger is still the likely candidate that gave them to him
