Volume 106 - Discussion Thread (July 4th, 2023)

think it was obvious based on his tattoo he'd have a tragic past. Doesn't justify his views though. All the admirals seem to have rough backgrounds (the color trio look poor/homeless as children)
This makes them a contrast to the yonkos

The yonkos were victims of The WG's policies
The admirals were victims of the Brutality of Pirates

🚨OFFICIAL: Eiichiro Oda reveals Ryokugyu and Fujitora's justice

Aramaki: Mortal Justice
Issho: Honorable Justice

Eiichiro Oda reveals that Aramaki's past must be very sad for him to wear such a tattoo under his chest...

The tattoo says "Shinagawa Shinju" ⤵️

"Shinagawa Shinju" or the "The Suicide of Shinagawa Lovers" is the title of a Rakugo play where an aging and ruined prostitute wishes to commit suicide. Having convinced a young man to leave with her by jumping off a bridge, the man refuses at the last moment, but she pushes him away. Before jumping in her turn, a messenger brings the prostitute the announcement that some money has arrived. Delighted, the idea of killing herself suddenly seems ridiculous and she returns to her activities.

Every single Admiral will have a promising and deep backstory
They will carry the final arc
:steef:
I would be extremely happy if Oda did this. He does have a lot of respect for the Marines, especially the Admirals, Koby, Smoker (not in terms of powerscaling/feats post TS though clearly lol) and such and especially who the Admirals are based on ofc.

Green Bull's tattoo implied a very sad backstory and he seemed the typical happy go lucky, easy going guy with a tragic backstory, like the sad clown/comedian cliche, when we saw him at Reverie. When he said he hadn't eaten for 3 years, I wondered if he purposely starved himself out of guilt or lost his appetite out of grief and his fruit kept him alive all this time, despite that. Or he was forced to go into some kind of hibernation, using his fruit to keep himself alive as he recovered for 3 years too.

His tattoo refers to a sad story about the suicide/deaths of two lovers involving a tree, I think drowning in a river by the tree and or one hanging themselves from the tree at least? I forgot the story lol. Shunsui's Bankai in Bleach TYBW directly referred to and thus was inspired entirely around this story too. I even suspected Green Bull might be lightly inspired by him due to that somehow.

https://gamerant.com/one-piece-admiral-green-bull-ryokugyu-facts/

Green Bull's behaviour is so exaggerated, so extreme, he's either truly devout and brainwashed, even more than Akainu is especially OR he's playing a role, he's faking it for his own personal agendas. Oda changed his character DRASTICALLY and I was insistent after his VA died that Oda would change how he depicted Green Bull but some people were skeptical of that idea to me lol. Green Bull is completely different now to how Oda depicted him at Reverie before, an entirely different character. BUT I think that version of Green Bull could and thus still may exist currently too as another side to this Green Bull we have now.

Oda is the type of author to make us "cry for the devil". He made the likes of Doflamingo, Senor Pink, Orochi, Kanjuro, Big Mom, Katakuri etc seem like tragic sympathetic characters and I wouldn't be surprised if he did the same for the Admirals. Its been implied the original Admirals have tragic, fucked up backgrounds, very much the same with Blackbeard too and Oda loves his tragic, fucked up backstories too ofc.

Fujitora has always had hints of a tragic backstory. A truly honourable, benevolent old man but he also speaks with immense gravitas and solemness at times, even trying to send people to "hell" and showing immense selflessness and regrets too. Since he's based on Zatoichi too, it helps inspire his character a lot and suggest what Oda has planned for him too.

Isn't it funny Zoro's family are associated with gambling, Fujitora's full name is unknown and Fujitora loves gambling too? One Piece has matched up Fujitora with Zoro multiple times, with Fujitora even personally targeting Zoro in Stampede at least...

Imo, Mihawk, Zoro and Fujitora will all be connected, as in Fujitora to both of them too but I can't really explain why/how fully yet. All speculation for now.

Fujitora's song is very melancholic too, it has that real 80's vibe to it, that sort of blues and samurai film eras vibes too:

The time is now to bet humanity and justice in the gambling den

In any case, this world is made up of evens or odds

Even though the current me cannot see

Malicious faces are the only ones I can see crystal clear

The gangs that form in the bars

And the fallen justice have not changed

Rassera Rassera Rassera Rassera

No need to rush, now is not the time

The Nebuta’s tiger can only move on the shoulders of men

It is a truly unfortunate occupation

Rassera Rassera Hinging on the answer

Rassera Rassera The unsettled tiger

In its respected domain, I sheathe my sword

The sun sees through my tricks

Those who dedicate themselves to this festival

Are wondrously spirited

Although there are good and evil in life

None are light or heavy

Rassera Rassera Rassera Rassera

No need to rush, now is not the time

The concealing fangs on the Nebuta tiger

When all worldly phenomena becomes transient,

Rassera Rassera Be unfearing of God

Rassera Rassera The howling tiger

Rassera Rassera

The gangs that form in the bars

And the fallen justice have not changed

Rassera Rassera Rassera Rassera

No need to rush, now is not the time

I also asked ChatGPT to summarise the saddest problems Zatoichi has faced over the various stories about him and this is what I got:
  1. Zatoichi's Loneliness: Being blind and a master swordsman makes Zatoichi a formidable character, but it also isolates him from others. Despite his kind heart, he often struggles with loneliness, unable to form lasting connections due to his transient lifestyle.
  2. His Unrequited Love: In several films, Zatoichi forms connections with women who he inevitably cannot be with due to his itinerant lifestyle and involvement in violent conflicts. This often leads to heartbreak.
  3. His Inability to Escape Violence: Despite his desires for a peaceful existence, Zatoichi constantly finds himself embroiled in violent situations. His superior sword skills often make him a target for those looking to prove themselves, resulting in unending cycles of violence.
  4. The Tragic Outcomes: Many of Zatoichi's adventures end in tragedy. People he befriends often die, and his interventions, while well-intentioned, sometimes lead to unintended consequences, contributing to his overall sadness and guilt.
  5. His Disability: Zatoichi's blindness, while adding depth to his character and skills, also adds a layer of sadness to his story. He faces discrimination and is often underestimated, despite his incredible abilities.
I was gonna mention he sounds like a Rurouni Kenshin character or even Kenshin himself and this seems to help that now too. The tragic wandering, remorseful swordsman/wanderer. One of the Seven Samurai was like that IIRC, Vash The Stampede, Sakata Gintoki and many other characters (including Mihawk) are based on these ideas/concepts too imo.

Fujitora and Green Bull like Zoro are related to Wano imo, hell I think Akainu might be at least too. Momonga as well and maybe Onigumo. NOT from there specficially but related to people there, having lineage/ancestry there. Hence they inherit Wano's history too indirectly. The hatred the Kurozumi both experienced towards themselves and for others too is not so dissimilar to Akainu and his "Absolute Justice" hatred of pirates too. There's other stuff too but I'll keep it as brief as possible for now lol.

I'm listening to this song right now and it feels like it could fit for a character like Kuzan, Fujitora, Drago or whoever:

Hope my usual nonsensical rambling makes some semblance of sense anyway lol.

Glad it didn't get revealed in the sbs like a certain redhead's..
Fucking Oda...
