Manga Discussion What are your wishes for the future of the manga industry?

I've been a comic book lover for as long as i can remember. I've dedicated the last few months to delving into the good things of the manga industry. Now i understand why people say that mangas are the future of the comics industry, and i'm excited about the idea.
We are in a time where many talented budding manga authors are emerging in the industry. Examples are Gege Akutami from Jujutsu Kaisen(Which i personally don't read.),Yuto Suzuki from Sakamoto Days, and Yukinobu Tatsu from Dandadan(I do read these two.). It's possible that many more budding authors will start serializing engrossing series with inspired and innovative stories in the near future.
This thread is for discussing what things we want to see in future new manga series. What themes we want the stories to have? What concepts we want the stories to use? Etc.
I wish for a manga about a epic fantasy world like Legends of Zelda and Dungeons & Dragons. Preferably one that uses the concepts like fairies, goblins, dragons etc in inspired and innovative ways to make the story really engrossing.
One idea that OP wasted and i think that some future new author could use better is the mythology about the Oni creature. After OP teased this concept but proceeded to never use,i searched about it in internet, and i think it would make for a good epic adventure manga. I imagine that some future author could subvert the legend of Momotaro and write a story where the Onis are more successful villains.

I never really got what the big deal was about sports manga, but Blue Lock peaked my insterest and I'm glad I gave it a chance.

Therefore I think sports manga could really be a big hit in the future. Personally, I'd love to see a tennis, swimming, or running manga.

Also, I think detailed art, which authors are employing nowadays, will become too much of a burden in afew years time for weekly (or even bi weekly) releases and will force either the prominent use of author-artist duos or more breaks issued by publishers for every mangaka

Did you try reading Eyeshield 21? Murata didn't draw as well as he does now when he started that one but it's a great sports manga and still has great drawings (or I remember it having them).

There's Seven Deadly Sins but that unfortunately fell off quite a lot, and pretty sure Fairy Tail deals with a lot of those but I've only ever heard bad things about it.

There's a very famous one called The Prince of Tennis. I myself haven't seen it but I've seen people praise it.

It's about American Football, right? That's as much as I kniw about it, but I'm not into Am Football so the premise isn't for me
Thanks for the recommendation tho

Sounds familiar but I'll have to look it up once I'm caught up with BL

Not the biggest fan of mangas right here but overall the future is looking rather fine. The new gen proved to us that we will still get good quality mangas so I can't really complain; even tho some of them aren't my cup of tea.

But, if we are talking about wanting to see something specific, I'd love to see a manga where the MC is a summoner. Being his main ability, summoning creatures (duh) from different dimensions in a bigger scale. For this to happen we'd need an author that's very proficient at drawing and inventing different monsters/creatures. But, I also think that a good story/plot is a must too so that it doesn't become boring soon. With that being said, and sadly (mostly for me), that's something that I'll probably never get to read at all.

I am not too familiar with it but I believe @Bogard and @JoNdule are.

Hol' up, you are into something... never found Yugioh interesting but I might give it a try...
The manga is a bit different than the anime at the start and the anime is way more tame, but it basically is what you asked for. Summoning creatures who fight each other. And the story evolves. At its essence it's still about those fights but for much different goals.

I'm not a big fan of watching the anime. Feels like I'm wasting a lot of time. 24 minutes for only 1/2 chapters worth of content is a bit too much. Might go for the manga

I absolutely agree with you. When I was younger I'd always opt for the anime first but these days I am all manga. I can knock out a volume's worth of chapters in the span it takes me to watch an episode or something.

I think this is the order of how the manga goes

Yugioh->Yugioh Duelist -> Yugioh R -> Yugioh Millennium World ->Watch Dark Side of Dimensions->End.

Agreed, at the beginning I didn't like anime for that reason, wasting too much time but I didn't like manga neither because of reading. Wasn't a big fan back there lol. Now that I can actually enjoy reading manga it's my go to option. (Plus skipping is ez if you ain't interested in what's happening).

Damn, that's quite a little bit. I found this page where I'll probably read it.

Not sure if it's everything but it looks like "base" Yugi-Oh at the very least.

There are a lot of interesting themes but what is important is how they are executed. Look at One piece, a story about pirates doesn't seem anything special but here we are, this to say there are, taking the OP example, dozens and dozens of mangas with dragons, fairies, goblin with a fantasy setting. Yet most of them are garbage, the typical isekai comes to mind, one I find good with those options is Goblin slayer which is well executed and likeable because it has perks that make it original (the MC and friends are strong but not overpowered, the MC is obsessed about goblins to the point of madness..).

So, for sure I would like the industry to make less and less isekai since 99% of them are the same story which is garbage after a few chapters at best, going from Solo leveling, it is a manhwa, korean manga, all the way to the worst and generic ones, "hero healer" or something like that where the MC was as trash as a generic villain.

The best examples are HxH, the world is just a fantasy world without anything too exceptional but what is top notch are the characters and their development (see Meruem) but also the power system.. other stuff which is way less main stream but that I liked is Heresy (some dozen chapters then indefinite hiatus) which was very original for the art style which was perfect to describe a sort of ancient chinese fantasy world permeated by death, sadly I didn't see any ither art style so unique but just the usual quality (or pieces of art like in solo leveling, manhwa, or the usual way of draw it, Toryama, Oda, Kubo, Kishimoto etc. etc.).

I feel like a new twist on an old concept like Spy x Family could be good. By this, I mean a previously unseen (or at least rare) take on an old concept.

Take bullying in manga for example, which is a super common theme. It is a story usually done in a revenge/thriller genre and can be both infuriating (due to the cruelty of the bullies) and satisfying (when the bullies get visited by karma). I am following three stories in this regard right now.

The first one is Juujika no Rokunin:

It's a sadistic story on the running to be the most violent manga ever written. It angers me at times since the author really knew both how to create characters we don't want to get hurt and how to create callous villains who are vile beyond redemption, but I just can't have enough of reading it. :pepebuggy:

The second one is Juvenile Offender:

A Korean Webtoon/Manhwa with a smart MC out for vengeance against the bullies that destroyed him and his entire family. It's to the point and so far a satisfying story that I look forward to every week. :pepecroc:

However, both stories involve the victims themselves taking matters into their own hands. Be that as it may, there are revenge/thriller stories that take a rare twist on the bullying genre: involving the adults.

There was this Japanese film called Confessions, released in 2010:

The story involves a middle school teacher whose only daughter is brutally murdered by two of her students. One a prodigious psychopath, another one a perennial loser. Due to lax Japanese laws about teenage crime, both got off with a slap on the wrist. So, she decided to avenge her daughter in the most ruthless way possible. I remember liking the film because of its rare take on the bullying genre and because it managed to present itself not only as a compelling revenge thriller but also as an exploration of motherhood and the bond between mother and their children. Teachers vs Violent Highschoolers is nothing new, but Confessions took it to its most extreme logical endpoint. :pepehawk:

It wasn't until years later that I found a compelling revenge thriller that involves adults and bullying in "Is the bully bad, or is the bullied me bad?":

The story is about a taciturn teacher who was cruelly bullied as a high schooler to the point where he suffered permanent scars all over his body and became a recluse. After a class reunion, he found out that most of his bullies are now living a normal and/or successful life, whereas his chief bully, an ardent believer of the strong eats the weak, is now a successful banker. He decided then he could no longer live with this injustice, so he began his path of revenge. To make things more interesting, he is now the homeroom teacher of the daughter of his chief bully and she is currently suffering as a bullying victim, just like he was in the past. :pepeshit:

And then I recently found a manga similar to this, which is also the third revenge story I currently follow. It's called Maria no Danzai:

Pretty, isn't she? Kind and popular, too, among her students as "Saint Maria of the Infirmary." What most people didn't know about this drop dead gorgeous school nurse with nigh-infinite benevolence is her only son was viciously bullied to death when he was a middle schooler, so she decided to infiltrate the high school the bullies go to in order to give them proper judgement. This is a story in the same vein with Juujika no Rokunin, with an interesting MC you want to root for and a gang of merciless villains you just cannot help but hate. :pepebusi:

I actually don't mind reading more mangas where it's the adults who take charge over delivering retribution toward bullying done in the past. An interesting story, I think, would be something like this: a father who is a black ops operative specializing in torture and interrogation. A wife and two kids, normal family on the outside. His wife knows what he does, but keeps his secret. He tries to be a decent dad whenever he isn't out on a mission and in general has a good rapport with his family.

What they don't know is their oldest kid got bullied by a bunch of budding psychopaths in school but kept quiet, to the point where, one day when he is far away on a mission, the bullies' brutality caused the death of the kid. It broke the family apart, and his wife took their other kid away after a divorce.

He immediately discovered what really happened to his kid and then prepared to kill the bullies off, but, on the way, he realized that killing the bullies off would not be really satisfying, since his kid still won't come back and his family is already split. So, he decided to make them feel what he feels by deciding to, instead, destroy their lives.

The bully who is also an aspiring athlete? Can't aspire for nothing after his visit.

The bully with a normal "parents + kids" household? Won't be so normal anymore.

The pretty/handsome honey-trap bully? Won't be so pretty after meeting him.

The bully with a loving single mom? Oooops.

Heck, make the main bully the kid of some high-ranking politician with plenty of strong bodyguards to make the father's journey of revenge a lot more challenging.

Just my two cents. :pepapoo:

1. A martial arts manga or manhwa with fast and fluid art, but also a proper story. The recommended manhwa and manga examples are Gosu, Sakamoto Days, How to Fight.

2. Mind-bending stories. The recommended manhwa and manga examples are Friday Forbidden Tales, Nocturne, and Brain Anthology.

3. If i can be blunt, i want original hentai mangas with proper story. Recommended examples are Circles and Nozoki Ana.

---

Ahem anyway, what i want the most:

- A long-term, grand-scale fantasy with beautiful art (think Ghibli's Howl's Moving Castle, Legend of Zelda Breath of The Wild, Legend of Mana) and storytelling/execution (think Berserk's Eclipse, Vagabond, Friday Forbidden Tales) with adventure and exploration as its main theme and reason to fights or strategize. Think One Piece arcs, but MC must fight and defeat the big monster not because the monster boss (like Kaidou) is a tyrant that oppressed everyone. No not that, but for exploratory reasons, such as because the monster is the final guardian of a mystical treasure, or the final obstacle to an island with the most beautiful fish in the world, or because defeating the monster will allow the MC to unlock the key to the final puzzle in the dungeon, or the long-lost item that is crucial to revive a fairy kingdom's waterfall of life or something.

My wishes is for the author freely express their idea and have enough day off or break to relax with their family.
And for the Theme/Genre, i think the current Trend Theme/genre that we get is enough. i only need the author to be healthy thats all.
