It's more like the explanation he gave talking about WB, because he knew WB.
Now, personally I think was completely out of character for WB to not go and lay waste on Onigashima (and are were talking about prime or at worst semi-prime WB), but Oda did an absolute mess making Oden a member of WB's crew and that's it.
But having said that, if even WB canonically did not want to fight with Kaido and his crew, even after he killed his precious Oden, then no one should be clowened for doing the same while having even way less serious reasons.
