Really only once. Film Broly is not canon save for Super's version. They did exactly what Ive wanted Oda to do with villains from Strong World onward, create new versions of them for the canon story. Still he teases Shiki repeatedly and we never truly get to see him lol. But Z, Tesoro and Bullet all fit other unexplained factions in the actual canon story too.

There are some cases in which editor are indeed helpful, ( Chinning Exam ) and some author go way overboard without regulations

But I feel like a author should do whatever the fuck it wants, if it fails it's the author responsibility alone

What matters is the quality of the manga. If Oda put the editors to rest, let's say, after Wano well, then he should have done that years ago.
