General & Others Why Is Whole Cake Island So Hated?

Wano makes Ass Cheek Island look like a goddamn masterpiece but from a writing standpoint WCI was a steaming pile of shit.
  • Sanji’s ‘character arc’ was stupid. For some reason he forgot what Zeff told him and spent many unenjoyable chapters wallowing in self pity and choking on his own martyrdom complex
  • Plot points and characters brought up for no good reason and randomly dropped from the story without explanation. Case in point: what happened to Sanji’s objection to Germa’s cloning and domestic violence tendencies? Fuck that shit I guess just put the damn raid suit on one arc later
  • Pedro’s death was fucking lame as shit. I don’t care about his character and his supposed bond with Carrot was pretty much nonexistent. We’d never seen them so much as think about each other or have a conversation on panel before that
  • Big Meme is a joke, and not even a funny one at that. Only female Yonko degenerates to the mentality of a toddler, falls flat on her face and her named attack can’t even kill a fucking tree smfh. I cannot believe this is the same writer that gave us Doffy, Croc and Akainu
  • Katakuri’s character makes absolutely no fucking sense. This dude loves his family, but evidently not enough to put down Luffy ASAP because... he’s going to beat up the Charlottes assembled in Chocolate Town. Hello? Katakuri? ...ok I guess fuck them too lol

I'm just wondering why the most controversial arc in One Piece is the most controversial arc in One Piece.

WCI was bad. Without Katakuti vs Luffy fight, it was atrocious

It's not really fair to compare WCI to Wano because Wano hasnt reached its climax yet.

To be fair, we should compare Wano to <WCI minus Katakuri vs Luffy> and Wano wins hands down

Basically what Den_Den said.

I've actually realized lately, that post-skip there is one clear theme with Oda's writing:

I usually enjoy the first half of an arc, forgiving Oda for some minor plot issues. That's when I always try to convince others, that the arc isn't bad and that we should wait for the second half and the great finale.

Then the second half happens and I get more and more disappointed until it comes to a point, where I simply can't stop bitching about the writing anymore. Deservedly, I might add.

In my eyes Oda has butchered the second half of Punk Hazard, Dressrosa, WCI and now is on his best way to do the same with Wano.
The really annoying themes in the second halfs of all those arcs are:

1) Horrendous pacing
2) Tons of PIS and plotholes including the "Oda-special": Fake-out deaths galore
3) Very unsatisfying resolutions to most character arcs/developments

Because Shonen at large and this series in particular breeds complacent readers. The standard arc formula is breast milk and deviation causes upset. They don't understand why Sanji's arc doesn't get resolved with a fight and why his pride as a cook means having his masterpiece unmolested. For one thing.

Big Mom.

It was very entertaining until the Tea Party end. Then it became bad.
It became Luffy centric, he is fighting someone entirety of arc, be it fodders, Cracker, Katakuri and Everyone. Pacing, bad ending to character arc and story. And maybe for some, their fav character not being present.
What’s the problem with Luffy-centric, Yo? Isn’t that exactly what Sabaody, Amazon Lily, Impel Down and Marineford were? 😂

Not really. I for one would welcome it, if Oda changed his standard arc formula for once (spoiler alert: WCI was the same formula, disguised in a different coat).

Most here are just old enough to look at the writing objectively and not just wank everything Oda tries to sell us.

I liked the arc, but this I 100% agree with. It feels forced to give Carrot some meaning. Much like how forced Oden is.

I know you like Den Den's post, but can you elaborate on your own points? For example: what makes the horrendous pacing and PIS, how that's particular to this arc but doesn't contradict then saying that it's the same old formula being but thinly disguised.

I truly hope Pedro is still alive that will perhaps mean no Carrot joining the SHs :P

But I'm actually one of the few WG users who would feel that not appalling if she joined
I like her more than Jinbore in any case, but enough is enough. There is too much of them, and he won’t be able to give any of them the proper attention they deserve, sad times.

Of course, here you go.

The standard OP formula is applied to WCI. Many think that the escape story was something entirely new, but it really wasn't. Only on the surface it was something unique. The general formula was still the same:

1) Sail to new island - check

2) Meet the locals (oftentimes a young female as local hero) - met Pudding, who was first an opponent and later on a damsel (different clothing than usual, but idea stays the same)

3) Learn about the bad guys and problem of the good guys - confrontation with Sanji, where the big dilemma became obvious (different clothing, because this time the "good guy" was one of their own)

4) Meet the bad guys and fail - loss against the enraged army/imprisonment/loss at the tea party

5) backstory of the local hero and sometimes even villain - Sanji's/Pudding's/BM's backstories

6) re-match against bad guys again and win - escape at the last second/Luffy's win against Katakuri/Sanji "winning" with the cake (cake plot was a different clothing as a victory, but idea was the same)

7) banquet - party on the ship (smaller than usual, but we still got it)

Oda really only did minor changes to his usual formula.

Now we come to the pacing issues. I don't know why you thought that this would contradict with the points before.
The entire second half of WCI lasted for more than 30 chapters. Those were 30+ chapters of BM screaming "weeeeddiiiiiinnnngg caaaaakeeee" and Luffy vs Katakuri basically. Highlighted by some gross fake-tension moments in between (Sunny seemingly being destroyed, Pound "dying", BM's wave against the ship, BM on the ship herself etc.).

30 chapters were entire arcs pre-skip!

Just to put this into perspective: This completely pointless and ridiculous escape plot alone lasted way longer than the entire Drum Arc (24 chapters), Jaya Arc (18 chapters), Sabaody Arc (18 chapters), Impel Down Arc (25 chapters) and just as long as the entire Marineford Arc (31 chapters).

30+ chapters that only achieved these things: Luffy's questionable win against Katakuri, Sanji's cake healing BM, them escaping on the Sunny

It's borderline criminal pacing, if you think about it.

As for the PIS and plot-conveniences, I won't even start. There are simply way too many there to list them here. Den_Den and a few others have already named a few, but there are countless more.

There are some scenes that are just too convenient and PIS for me to swallow them such as how Brûlée was captured and used again so easely after the second round with Katakuri which was just an annoying repeat of how she was captured and used before the Tea Party and a particulary convenient way for Luffy to escape Katakuri, the fact that the Big Mom Pirates only sent squads led by Nusstorte without any Sweet Commander or Veteran to lead them and without Anti-Germa weapons despite Big Mom having made it clear how she wanted the Germa tech or Compote leaving with the BMP fleet only to return to WCI for no reason and without having even a piece of dialogue.

Saboady? Marineford? I didn't mean Luffy centric in that way. Bt that he is overshadowing everyone else.

In amazon lily n Impel Down there weren't other SHs. Saboady had SNs, MF had WBPs, ID escapes. And tbh i rushed through Impel Down arc. Amazon lily was short one.

Another problem is Luffy vs Fodders, while imp fights gets offpaneled. Luffy vs Urashima, Udon fights.
