Unless you want to cope and say that, of all the countless characters, Oda put Saint Shanks there for the lulz of it?

He literally didn't, being stronger swordsman and being stronger are 2 different things.
Pica used sword vs Sanji first, then he dropped his sword and focused on his Haki only, and thats fodder Pica trying that, whose Haki wasn't even highlighted like Vergo before.
Saint Shanks's Haki gets hyped almost every single time he appears, only a moron would deny Saint Shanks doesn't have better Haki than Mihawk, if he does the same thing that fodder Pica tried, Saint Shanks would smash Mihawk without needing sword skill. And for sure, Saint Shanks's Kamusari doesn't cut, and Saint Shanks wouldn't really need a sword to replicate same feats. And same Kamusari style user Roger, wasn't WGS despite being PK and equal of WB.
Also, both Alber and Sanji confirmed using sword doesn't make someone a swordsman too. Saint Shanks can be like Alber, no one says he couldn't.

We also know that Mihawk LOST to Saint Shanks in their last bout, since Saint Shanks assumed that Mihawk wanted to settle accounts (if Saint Shanks was the loser there would be no reason to think that).
Ergo, Mihawk reputation is based on smoke and mirrors. Bullying weaklings and running from the strong like this baddass here

The Mihawk vs. Saint Shanks debate is endlessly funny to me. Luffy is the protagonist of the story and will always be the strongest character among the crew. Zoro's goal is to surpass Mihawk. Oda will never make it so the second-in-command is stronger than Luffy, the captain. Therefore, if only for story reasons, Saint Shanks should be stronger than Mihawk. Even if he wasn't, Oda will make it so that he is.

Luffy objective is to give back Saint Shank's hat AFTER he conquers the sea. For story reasons alone, it will be his last proper bout.
