He was genuinely a moron and a bad person who made a lot of bad decisions, but he was very charismatic and influential anyway. This is why I'm pretty sure the whole Yamato cover story will be about learning this/becoming different from Oden.
You're not supposed to root for him. You're supposed to root for Luffy, the main character, and kinemon and the others who have suffered so long. You're supposed to get mad at Oden. He died to save their lives in his last moments but he was still a scoundrel who put himself over his country and was directly responsible for it getting worse for decades. They respect him as a samurai and honor his legacy but he still hurt the country. Its important that momonosuke is Better, and Oden's actions are why he needed to convince the people he was a real leader and not just a name.
I don't understand this attitude like Oden was this flawless character that Oda betrayed. He was introduced from the first scene being a guy who put himself and his own interests over the country or culture. To him eating soup over his friend's burning corpse is fine, but it made his entire family upset and he was being an asshole interrupting a funeral
