And personally speaking I don't think so Old beard is physically weak until Heart attack or stuff like that comes up.
I have Old beard > Shanks in terms of physical strength.
And shanks was himself pretty chill during the clash. I won't say he barely managed it lol.
Whitebeard knows who he's talking to , he's probably a good enough character to have an eye for strong people.
