That doesn't mean he would give up his dream, I'm just saying he will give up the chains of his ego caused by feeling like he needs to make up for his past suffering, and become free.
Edit: Because since his ego is something he relies on due to weakness of character, once he is strong enough and above most in strength, he will not feel looked down on by anyone anymore, and will be able to recognise the ego as a crutch, and let go of it, becoming free.

We'll see what happens, his dream and goals can change upon him finding more information, at the end of the day, pirate king is a means to an end for Luffy and Law, and it may be so for Kidd too, pirate king may even be incompatible with his dream, I believe he will reach his dream, but not the position of pirate king,
Edit: Luffy would also definetly give up the fight for pirate king if it was incompatible with, or didn't matter to, his dream, and if he knew that,,
You're right, most people who succeed in real life, especially in the example you used, are usually arrogant and despicable. But this is a fantasy manga, which tries to make a good portrayal of nice people (not just by making them look right, but also by making them strong leaders or even world changing characters). This is pretty obvious, since pirates in real life are just crooks (thieves, pillagers, kidnappers, etc.)... no wonder Kid met his end at the hands of a "Peace Main" (see below).
Also it's pretty accurate and funny that all of the people at the top of the world, wanting to be pirate king, don't care about pirate king at all except for it being a means to their actual dreams, they don't care at all about just being above because a title says so, and about the pride aspect of it.
I don't think Kidd needs to change anything as a character.
Him being cocky and being reckless defines him as a pirate. That's what drives him. He has ambition and he's always ready to move forward even if it means death - that's how his character is.
He doesn't need to change and become more like Luffy or law - that would be boring.
Problem is oda dropped the ball with WG. They were supposed to rival Luffy but rather actually giving any meaning to this idea, oda made all WG (bar Zoro for obvious reasons and BB) just some pirates who needs Luffy as Mesiah to save them.
"Kid is so arrogant why didn't he learn his lesson the first time", it is clear that Kid haters are completely detached from reality and have no idea what its like and what is required to seriously compete in a sport and succeed. Look at all the real life UFC fighters and boxers. They are all like Kid. They are determined and ambitious, but are also arrogant, boisterous and have a bit of an ego. That is what real life competitors are like. You think after they lose a fight/match they just give up? No, they call out the person right after demanding a rematch, believing they can win the next time. They retain their confidence. That is a fighters/sportsman mentality. Personality doesn't win people fights. The people in real life with Luffy's and Shanks personalities aren't winning anything. These people are those who sucked at sport as a kid and kept getting outperformed by people like Eustass Kid. Then those people started watching animes to watch characters with their personalities succeed in a fictional world.
In real life, all shanks personality people have Oda's fat physique (Oda has shanks personality after all). So it's not surprising that the majority of this fanbase hates Kid. It is an anime fandom after all.
Both very hard working, determined, ambitious. Respected and admired by the people. But they still had confidence and ego. The believed they were the best. I admire when people are able to confidently say that they will win beforehand, knowing the consequences of the backlash they would get if they lose. Likewise, i dont like or respect people that hate on others for trying and losing

I think in a realistic story, he would change for the better once he got at the top, unless his goal was to dominate others, that's how ego works, but either way Kidd just cares about his dream, which may just be something he can reach by becoming the pirate king, and may not even necessitate it, maybe making Kidd not care about pirate king anymore.
Personally I think Kidd's dream, which is what he actually cares about, requires Nika and Luffy as pirate king, so there isn't any problem, although Kidd will definetly be close in strength.

shanks had already given them 2 warnings and they still returned, he knew that even after they surrendered they would just come back again and who know which civilians they'd threaten that time in their hunt for shanks.

Muhammad Ali… the dude who famously said “I don’t fight for me but for my brothers and sisters who are sleeping on concrete, for the Black Americans who can’t eat; black people who don’t have a future.”
Literally the exact opposite of Kid who only does shit for himself and more akin to Luffy who fights for others and to give people hope.

Yeah, the sentiment is right, but the conclusions reached are wrong, because of a choice to ignore context and some things, caused by something, maybe pride, maybe ego, maybe just misplacing it.
I hate roger. Completely inaccurate depiction of a pirate let alone pirate king. I seem him as an explorer not a pirate. Also not an interesting personality and quite a bland fighting style as well
