Kids don't get sex education until they're atleast in middle school when the hormones start to develop/rage, with the practical purpose of reducing teen pregnancies. But teaching elementary school kids about sex and gender, something too complicated for them to understand and are very impressionable, is just fine. Its not about knowing sex and gender (although little kids already know about gender Freud) its about teaching very early to kids that gender barriers and identities are not big invariable boxes and how to let them explore their emotions without societal carcans and preconception.

If you don't teach that to kids early, it will be impossible to teach that to them later. And the more it goes, the harder it is to understand such concept.
