The Japanese Kanji reads more along the lines of "The legendary demon who once fought equally with the Pirate King"
Viz simplified it to "Equal of even the pirate king"

It's basically a restatement of what Buggy said.

So basically WB is hyped as someone who fought Roger equally to standstill



Garp is hyped as someone who fought near death battles with Roger and both survived


Power level wise - oda hyped both Garp and WB on same benchmark.

You don't get near death battles unless equal

Why do y'all keep parroting that "Dragon has done nothing"... when people are being shook at the mention of his name because he's been doing shit off-panele... That makes 0 sense. Dragon changed the entire story when he appeared in chapter 100.....

I see it as the narrator and Buggy simply referring to the fight in the flashback where both were equals. That would make Buggy's statement and Narrator's statement true that Newgate did fight against Roger as equal to a standstill for 3 days. But we also know both were fucking around, as they partied each night. Other people see it as a general statement of everyttime the two fought they were always equals (which inherently doesn't make sense due to one of them being the underling of Roger's greatest pirate rival).

On the other hand we have death battles with Garp-Roger, from Roger's own mouth. Death battles as we know also stimulate individual growth in Haki and such. So near death battles against each other where neither died vs spars where they party every night.

He is a legend too and as I said the gap is very close. Even if Primebeard wins, he would need a extrem high diff.
