The technique, the adaptation was Mahoraga's. Sukuna applied the adaptation (extending the range of the slash) that Mahoraga came up with. Obviously he'll have to do the technique, did you expect Mahoraga to also world-slash Gojo for him after he died from Purple ?

I don't think you (or more importantly - the author) should be content with a very boring/generic ending though.
It's still art and should never be boring.
A good ending doesn't necessarily need many deaths or sth like that.
What it does need is
1) Proper pacing that feels adequate in the overall context of the entire story (suddenly rushing to the end in a few chapters when you had a manga that is several hundred chapters long is just not good writing).
2) A dramatic highlight scene to show the importance of the final conflict.
3) A conclusion to all the major storyarcs.
Many mangas simply fail at step 1) already though.
It's still art and should never be boring.

JJK did not go mainstream with Gojo vs Sukuna.
It went mainstream because of the anime, specifically season 2. JJK's cultural footprint skyrocketed as a result of the anime, and for the millions came with the anime that now make up the majority of the fanbase, the party is only just getting started. They have no idea the series is already ending.
Who have you seen complaining the series has gone on for too long? No one familiar with shounen. Certainly not anyone familiar with JJK, given the fans are complaining about the lack of follow through and closure.

You're right and wrong at the same time.
Nobody says Yuji wasn't skillful and precise in his attacks, that's where you're right.
However, you're wrong in thinking this contradicts what I said. Yuji's attacks weren't effective in hurting Sukuna as much as they were effective on damaging his hold on Megumi and continuously nerfed his output and his control over the body.
He can hit Sukuna's soul directly all he wants, it would have been a lot less effective than what he pulled this fight.

That was useful because hitting Mahito's soul was the only way to hit him, like using haki against a logia.
It doesn't have that impact on other opponents.

Outside of a heian era flashback, and better writing in the fights, what exactly is there to extend the series?

The ending has wrapped up some of the elements from early on and done rather well. The hints were obvious and ongoing. Gege did give the series an appearance of being the manga version of Street Fighter then came back on-topic with story. I agree that there has not been proper pacing. Sukuna's power and endurance have been one of the highlights. The other highlight, that seems to have been missed, is Yuji's role as the boddhisatva. This has been repeated over and over in the series, in indirect and direct ways (chapter 265 being obvious). Sukuna chose to remain a curse and refused the boddhisatva's mercy. It does seem rushed to conclude all arcs in 5 chapters.
Not as bad as GoT doing it in one episode.
