Powers & Abilities If swordsmanship is so powerful why there are characters who don't use the sword?

Joke aside, the main reason why the sword is the main melee weapon is that the aesthetics of One Piece are based on the Age of Sail, and weapons like spears or maces had fallen by the wayside, both in armies and navies (who still had a practical use for cutlasses)

Now, that said, boarding axes were still in use.

Because characters have different fighting styles. Some just may not be good with swords at all like luffy. Why would someone like luffy try to force himself to become a swordsman when he's a natural brawler.

People who don't use swords or other weapons are outliers. Roger and Rayleigh used one, Xebec used one, even Whitebeard used a supreme grade blade, just as Big Mom used a sword. Because majority of the time you are stronger with a weapon than barehanded. That is especially true if you are proficient with a weapon/sword. Alternatively, you have a busted Logia fruit which replaces the weapon.

Garp basically is the exception since he is an exceptionally good hand to hand combatant. For guys like Luffy, a weapon wouldn't really compliment his abilities.

With swordsmanship you trade endurance, and the ability to take hits, for more damage, swordsmanship is a different fighting style than brawling or shooting, not a direct improvement in everything, it has it owns advantages and disadvantages, =],

Zoro would disagree. Nami labeled him as the toughest guy. And indeed, that guy can take a shit ton.

Neither does Diamante.

Does Dorry/Broggy scream Elbaf 1 sword style before using Hakoku? :kobeha:
its hilarious to me that these retards think roger doesnt have a school or style when shanks literally learned swordsmanship from him
cause if it doesnt have a school or style then practically any acoc swordsman can replicate kamusari with a single sword slash

in an alternate universe, zoro actually said kamusari here

Its called being obtuse on purpose.

The very fact that Divine Departure is an attack thats inherited between Shanks/Roger shows that Shanks inherited Roger's swordsmanship.
