I've already given my vote but Arthur Dayne defeating the Smiling Knight the way he did was a very impressive feat which should not be overlooked. Jaime described the Smiling Knight as being "The Mountain of his time" so his prowess was clearly no joke.

In the duel against Dayne, the Smiling Knight had dozens of wounds before Arthur allowed him to take a new sword. And then killed him. It was an overwhelming performance.

"Prolonged fight" yea but we don't really know how much in this context. But it probably was much less than an hour.

I’ll always choose relevant, actual characters we see over people who died centuries ago. Not only are they overhyped by contemporaries but by generations who grew up on their stories.

I'm going with Bobby B on this one.

Ned's descriptions of Robert in his fighting prime border on the homoerotic, but ultimately, I think the function of Robert within the story and world of ASOIAF demand he lives up that.

Tywin didn't necessarily fear Robert, but he knew he had a path to 7 kingdoms through him, not just the one. Of course only the Greyjoys were mad enough to try him, and that didn't end well for them even at sea.

Aemon the Dragonknight may have been a truer and nobler knight on his worse day, but he was a protector by nature, whereas Robert was practically made for war. He would've lived a happier, more fulfilled life dying a much younger man on a distant battlefield with a warhammer in hand. I think that ferocity and willingness to do harm counts for a lot.

If I'm not wrong Rhaegar and Robert fight was equally matched until robert carved his chest out with his War Hammer.
And I don't think so Rhaegar was as Talented as Aemon Dragon Knight.
Prime Robert Baratheon feels more with like Mountain with Brain and skills.
But I would give benefit of doubt to Aemon.

I love Robert as much as the next guy but Aemon is no Rhaegar. Rhaegar only took up arms seriously once he came across the prophecy.
Aemon was born in it, molded by it, didn't see he sister's vagina until he was already a man.

Rhaegar was a goon, is all I'm saying.

Yeah, he was a sensitive pretty boy, but he was formally instructed for most of his life. He learned of the prophecy young and then dedicated his life to see it through. He was committed to the mission, so I imagine he was very diligent in his training and probably quite a good warrior in his own right, albeit not an equal to the likes of Barristan the Bold and Arthur Dayne - who are both considered for the outright GOAT.

Robert vs Rhaegar was portrayed as a fierce duel and afterwards Robert couldn't ride and let Ned go on. Since he got wounded against him.

On horseback though.

Horseback would naturally favour the lighter prince using a much lighter weapon.

Robert also had notches on him from fighting the war. Rhaegar didn't join the war until the Trident.

Rhaegar was one of the best. He managed to unseat Sir Barristen the Bold after cracking 7 lances against him in the tilt.

he’s admired by Jaime at one point as well.

I don’t see a character we know nothing about besides hype — which, GRRM is very conscious and frequently uses “inconsistent narrators” — whereas we have living witnesses to both Bobby G and Rhaegar

It’s very unlikely Aemon is good enough to win

Rhaegar was a superb warrior, don’t know what you guys are smoking lmfao. Dude out-jousted Barristan and had something of a rivalry with Dayne.

Anyway, Robert defeated Rhaegar so I’m not sure what the issue is. If Robert hadn’t have beaten him, Rhaegar would have likely made it into this tournament.

As for the matchup, Robert in his prime is somewhat overrated, but I do think he probably wins this. Robert in his prime was meant to be such an awe inspiring figure that he won all of his battles through martial might, and he was chosen as the King because of how awe inspiring he was. His battle with Rhaegar was truly the stuff of legend.

I have Robert > the Dragon Knight personally.

To me, when I consider the Dragonknight's portrayal, with him not only being a legendary Kingsguard in terms of skills but also literally carrying a Valyrian blade, I frankly don't know if anybody in Martin's lore would start with an outright advantage on him in a duel, like with better chances than a 50/50.
