and Oda did not show/highlight that by some third party that "Luffy surpassed Rayleigh"
then that simply means Rayleigh is STILL stronger
That's an iron-clad rule in Shonen... remember it
Oda can highlight that moment by so many ways:
1- The Naruto/Jiraya style: a master defeated by someone, and Luffy defeats him
2- Luffy defeating an old rival for Rayleigh, who saw Rayleigh's prime strength and acknowledges that Luffy state surpasses rayleigh
3- Luffy meets Rayleigh again, and Rayleigh through his eyes, acknowledges that
4- Or both of them fight together and Rayleigh sees that he surpassed him
5- a Member from Roger crew fights alongside Luffy (such as Scopper Gabban) and he acknowledges it
And many other ways.... point is... when Luffy surpasses rayleigh, it will be 100% sure mentioned... cause Shonen always highlights the moment a student surpasses his teacher
It's why EVEN TO THIS DAY, even after defeating Katakuri... Luffy is remembering techniques from Rayleigh like the advanced 3rd stage Ryuu
We don't yet know if Rayleigh showed Luffy an advanced king's haki during training to demonstrate something.. or even more mysterious stuff

As for being overwhelmed, Kaido looked overwhelmed when he got punched in the head by a Gear 3rd Luffy, only for next chapter to end up being Kaido to one shot a Gear 4th Luffy.
We’ll see what happens next week.
Except... the SAME PEOPLE (Kawamatsu and Onimaru) who are rejecting the idea of Zoro holding Ryuuma sword... they are the ONES who were collecting swords from the graves from Samurai... and saying the ideology that "the war is not over" and to honor those Samurai "we pick the sword of our brethren and fight with it"
What they complained about with Ryuuma sword completely contradicts that belief.... And if I want to take it another notch.... I think we all can agree that Ryuuma himself would be MORE HAPPY if Zoro of the Samurai took his sword and LIBERATED WANO with it, since he was its protector and always cared about protecting Wano from danger in the past
I literally hated how Shusui gave so easily... it's bad... Like Zoro could have given the sword away and accepted a replacement BUT ONLY after he liberated Wano with Shusui
That would make much more impact on the sword value!

Would have lost to Germa + Firetank +Strawhats. Something people don't get it, Kaido is the reason why This crew has survived NW.
Retainers and samurai +Minks don't even even SNs to beat beats pirates excluding Kaido.
Retainers can't lose to cakamities and flyers , let alone lose to Doffy and crew.
