I want to get into the video game industry. I need recommendations for video games suitable for beginners.

The forms of media I have consumed in my life so far are movies, tv shows, books and comics. Recently, I realized that video games can be fun for me too.
Of course, learning all about consoles and how to play video games is something I have to do in real-life, but you guys at WG can help me learn about games that might be good for me as a beginner.
The genres I like are fantasy and adventure. Ratchet & Clank and Legends of Zelda are franchises that I've read about and think might be of interest to me. R&C because of its extraterrestrial worlds-themed settings and science and technology story theme, and LoZ because of its epic fantasy genre. Can anyone here who is a fan of these two tell me which of their games are good for beginners ?
I'm also open to trying any different genre, as long as it's fun, exciting, interesting and entertaining.

Witcher 3 if you want a good fantasy adveture where your choices can have an outcome on the story/characters.

Both of the Red Dead Redemption games for a good adventure story

Halo series for a great sci-fi shooter with an engaging story, fleshed out world and great characters.

Death Stranding for its uniqueness

Nintendo has great starter games of all genre. If you want fantasy rpgs look into Breath of the Wild.

As for sci fi based rpgs I’d look into the old school mass effect games, Ratchet and Clank is a solid shooter style rpg, the gun level up feature makes it rather addicting and encourages varying your play style.

As for other RPG games:
If you’re okay with more adult themes the Persona series is rather popular id recommend either the Persona 3 Reload or Persona 5 Royal. The battle system is simple and the metagame of it is quite fun with social links, but this game is incredibly long.

If you want more real time rpgs with very unique gameplay I’d recommend the Infamous series. They’re old, but if you have a PS3 or can get one cheap Infamous 1 and 2 are great and because of the morality feature you can get two solid back to back play throughs. Nothing against second son, I like it but it’s not as good as the first two imo

Finally another fun rpg is the borderlands series. Borderlands 2 and the pre sequel are fun and you can get those fairly cheap. They have a pretty simple gameplay and the side quests can feel tedious at times but there’s a lot of fun stuff in it to enjoy.

It's hard to make recommendations from settings/narrative genres like science fiction. I can recommend you Mass Effect just as I can recommend Alien Isolation.

First thing you have to do is try out different gameplay genres and see which ones you're into; some might surprise you.

Regarding the two you specifically asked about, the likes of Ratchet & Clank are great for beginners. Crash Bandicoot is a very similar saga of great games I grew up with that also got good remasters in recent years.

zelda games you will need latest nintendo console.

if on pc, then steam has

final fantasy VIII(original) and the hd remake with new update graphics.
final fantasy 8
final fantasy 9. imo my favorite rpg/fantasy one, heard it also getting hd remake.
stray (steam) about cat that get help of robots/so falls into fantasy, it narrative was good. with some mysteries
little nightmares, 1-2
Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach, mostly survival horror/exploration. but story between freddy and gregory was good.

other games

these are f2p, unless you decide wanna buy in game stuff. so it optional.

genshin (gacha) story is really good.
honkai star rail (gacha) story is really good.
Zenless zone zero (gacha) story is really good, this one has better friendship mechanics, as get to know character more. and npc can talk to to for more hidden lore/trigger events etc. heard it will be updated where character get will follow you on map. so more similar to rpg fantasy.

The Zelda franchise is probably the most critically acclaimed gaming franchise of all time. They are simultaneously a great entry point for new gamers, but they also offer a high ceiling for mastery. If you want to know which Zelda game to start with, don’t get me started because that’s a 20,000 word rabbit hole but generally speaking any Zelda is a fantastic starting point for a new gamer that also offers unforgettable stories and adventure.

Outside of Zelda, Mario is another great starting point for noobies, though I would argue the Mario games have almost no appeal to “hardcore” gamers excluding speed runners. If you’re looking for just simple fun then Mario is a phenomenal choice. I think Mario Galaxy is a game every human should experience.

The first Pokemon game you play will imprint on your heart forever. After that first one, the franchise is unbearably boring and you’ll never look back. Sorry Pokemon fans but you know it’s true.

I mean you really can’t go wrong with whatever games you start with depending on your taste. Start with Minecraft, start with Call of Duty, start with Assassin’s Creed, it doesn’t really matter. If a game looks fun to you, pick it up. The game will teach you how to play and if you enjoy the game it honestly doesn’t matter what anyone on the internet says.

Some bangers I would recommend:
Little Nightmares / Little Nightmares II
- Puzzle horror game where you play as a little dude in a big world. Has a big "kids vs. adults" type of vibe with other heavy themes. Very creepy vibe where you run around and try to survive. Won't really jump and scare at you though which I do like. Very good story done with no dialogue. Plenty of lore if thats your thing.
Diablo 3/4
- Top down RPG where you kill hordes of monsters and get loot until you get stronger and stronger. Controls might be weird and items might be a little confusing at first but you can easily get into a rhythm of just running in and killing things. People hate on its endgame but I have plenty of hours on it and so do others. Higher difficulties can be a mess though.
Mass Effect 1-3
- Shooter RPG where you command your squad to explore and save the galaxy. RPG elements arent too heavy. Mass Effect 2 in particular is beloved by fans and has a very good cast of characters and great dialogue. In these games you get to choose what to say to others and it can effect what happens in your playthrough. Can get sexually graphic.
Borderlands 2
- RPG shooter with heavy emphasis on looting. Very simple game design but was a classic of its time. Every other game in this series is only a comparable to this one. You follow the story while taking on plenty of side quests and get rewarded with guns. It has a future-sci-fi Mad Max setting where you kill bandits and also robots. Very graphic and downright nasty sometimes if you can stomach it. I was like 10 when I played it though so.

One game I recommend everyone try is Beyond Good and Evil. Incredible story, good sidequest stuff, good stealth, good combat, sci-fi setting with a little bit of fantasy. And the ending is wild. I played it when it originally released on PS2, but there is a remaster out on most platforms so I hope its good. I would recommend it to beginners also.

:quest: Do you plan to play on console or PC?
This is a very important question. Thank you, Smoke.
It seems like a good idea to me to start gaming on PC, since here at home we can easily afford things like computers and laptops.
I'll follow Toby's recommendation to start with platformers. I'll pick up the first Mario game and focus on beating it.
Here's a new question: Are Nintendo's games available for PC ? If so, is the first Mario game among them ?

Nah unfortunately Nintendo is very stingy with cross platform and none of the Mario games are on PC.

What's about emulators? Are there no longer N64, GBA, Gamecube Emulators available online? If PeperLevi wants to try newer Nintendo games, Cemu is also a good start, unless Nintendo also cancelled the sites.

Or if he's ready to pay few hundred dollars, he can buy a Switch with Nintendo Online - they also have legal (unlike the ones above) emulators for NES/SNES/GB/GBA/N64 games.

@AL sama @Uncle Van @Natalija @Bogard can I mention the e word?,

The thing Sentinel mentioned,
Well, I did mention emulators pirating games, so if it's against the policies of this side, mods can delete this part of my post (or can do it entirely). I recall it's getting a huge issue if you're start linking those sites with the emulators.
