I want Shanks to be

Shanks is the ideal goody two shoes pirate, that’s all he’ll ever be. It’s not a bad thing, you don’t need complexity to be a good written character. If anything, contradictions at this point will be bad especially if poorly executed.

Shanks will be written as a good character. Of that there is no doubt. As for what I prefer , any scenario can be interesting depending on how oda executes it.

Shanks as an evil aizen like character is most interesting but it may not be viable with oda's writing choice in general.

Personally I prefer grey shanks.

It’s far too late for Shanks to be anything other than the utmost goody goody.

In Film Red, you have the Red Hair pirates saying they can’t hurt brainwashed civilians no matter what…even if the civilians kill them. They even protected the civilians from the Navy. Shanks was letting them punch him in his face to the point it became bruised while still smiling.
Oda clearly intends for him to be a saint

its a non canon movie, and in that movie he also destroys an entire island and robs them of everythign they have before abandoning uta there with a demon summoning song.

No reason for him to turn out evil when he's been portrayed as the ideal inspiration for Luffy since chapter 1
in chapter 1 he says "needless killing doesnt make you a man" then has a guy murdered execution style for literally no reason 10 pages later. the only lessons luffy learned from shanks are "pirates are cool" and "pirates dont fight fair"

why does Robin sweat and show fear when she learns Luffy has connections with Shanks? Right after Enies Lobby too.

Do you want him to be a good pirate like Luffy? Do you want him to be evil? Or somewhere in the grey area? Would you like an evil twin and a good Shanks?

Please elaborate as to why!

Personally I want him to be good... Otherwise Luffy's whole backstory will be completely overturned, and all Shanks scenes would become insincere. Also I don't believe Oda would have the heart to make Shanks anything but good.
our Shanks will always be a gooddie
that's why Oda created a "second Shanks" that will be evil

I think shanks is good person, but will be more like mihawk towards luffy. He beleive in luffy but that doesn't mean he will not fight him. If luffy truly deserve one piece then shanks doesn't need to hold back against him and will fight with all his might.

I think a gray Shanks is still possible. Remember how Doflamingo treated his gang as if they were his close family? But at the same time he was absolutely ruthless to others?
Perhaps Shanks with his crew and allies are in the same attitude. Not as cruel as Doflamingo, but without any overly good intentions. He was somehow in no hurry to punish the mountain bandits in the first chapter (he beat them only when they kidnapped Luffy). He didn't really think about what would happen to the village after he sailed away.
And, his portrayal has been overly mysterious lately.
I would like a gray path, since two of the OG yonko are evil (Kaido, BM) and one is good (WB). Something like — Shanks is a "good guy", but his motives and goals are kinda ruthless or selfish (or both)

As stated he finds fodder crews in the new world and offer them his protection for nothing in return

As good as it gets.

Judging by his hobo-pirate lifestyle, throwing drinking parties and giving free patronage to everyone he meets is part of his ideology (just like BM who arranged a "utopia of all races" in Totto Land). I mean, he even convinced the Mihawk to drink, who is pretty "cold" and serious character. His protection of fodder captains looked kinda goofy during the clash with Kid. It looked like they were his drinking buddies — not full-fledged "super-nakama allies" like Luffy always had.
IMO, he gave me "unemployed hobo-musician" vibes; they will always help you out in a difficult situation, always cheer you up while drinking etc. But at the same time, many of them are pretty nasty people (womanizers, junkies, cheaters, etc.).

There is no “wanting” anymore, he is an established gray character. He obviously is more kind and compassIonate, more generous, more patient, more reasonable than any other powerful pirate.

He is still cunning, ruthless, lives a life of crime, and definitely kills people.

Regardless of his ultimate motive or his ultimate purpose in the plot, especially if he turns out to betray Luffy etc, it will just establish him as gray because you can point to whatever he has done from the opposite perspective and say “oh no look he’s a good/bad guy because he did this”.
