Controversial Characters that are protected too much

Luffy, one of the first times Oda broke the spell for me was at the end of WCI, not only when Luffy with half his crew stormed a yonko HQ without any consequences if not rob her of her poneglyph plus humiliating the whole crew and especially the yonko herself, but when he stayed behind to fight Kata just for the sake of it. When Ace did that he paid it with his life and making the bloody effort of the whole WB alliance almost pointless but when Luffy did it he defeated an enemy far stronger getting far stronger himself (midfight) and unlocking a world class ability.
Then for protected characters you have Zoro for example but for everything he does you can count an a crowd of people idolising him and another one hating him.

Shanks is only protected in the sense he hasn't fought someone worth his time on panel.
He only fought fodder Kidd then had a little bit more challenge with Bartolomeo and that's it.
Aside from the straw hats, I don't really see anybody protected and even them have plot working against them sometimes.
Maybe admirals, nobody has gone all out on them yet but the focus on them hasn't come either so it's normal I guess.
