Because he changed the plan for Going Merry. And frankly, Oda considering Going Merry a crew member is the most Oda-ish thing I can think of.
Again, though, he said he "hopes" to finish in 5 years. Its a generic statement. It doesn't mean he will. It doesn't mean he expects it to.

And in regards to the series being "just over" 100 volumes, recall that when the interview was made, Oda was reportedly smirking (according to Greg) and often known for making tongue-in-cheek comments like this to drive people crazy:

Why would I consider the volume thing a joke when it is coherent with his other statement that he hopes to finish it in 5 years?

If the two statements were incoherent, then you would have an argument.

and why are people surprised? it had been already pretty much clarified by sandman from that interview that it was indeed the 986... disappointed that there was "no content worth crying"? man, it's like taste and colors, everyone has their own sensitivity so people should stop getting overhyped and then criticizing

Another important thing people should notice is the setting.

Skypeia and Water 7 saga was a coherent part of the story, they were a creation when Oda was expanding the story. In another words, Skypeia and Water 7 saga is mostly filler-like the context of the larger story. So, Oda didn't plan them that tightly rather he was drawing/writing freely.

However, right now, the story is more tightly controlled and story bleeds over from one arc to the next. This means that Oda has to plan more thoroughly with less chance of wrong prediction.
Lol but it still is taking over 400 chapters to address 2 Yonko and having MORE setup the future (Kuma/Vegapunk/Bonney, Elbaf, 2 additional Yonko, final war, etc).

To me, it feels like the arcs are getting longer while still miraculously achieving less, lol

And still tightly controlled. The point is: Oda can no longer devote an arc to just having an adventure (Skypeia) or to focus on Straw Hats (Water 7). He has to incorporate all the big players or the big plot threads into it.

Hence he has greater predictive accuracy. Before, he could diverge to a fun adventure arc that has very little payoff for the larger story. That is no longer the case.

Again though, it still took him 400 chapters to get that point with 2 Yonko and "focused" arcs. And the 2 comments you say are "coherent" (not sure why that word was used? His statements are all coherent, they are just never true) are just 2 of many comments he's made over the years about progress. He has made statements in the past where he says he's "halfway" and then mentions "50%", and both were made around Skypeia.

Him doing it here isn't new, and thats the point I'm making. Be my guest and trust him in thinking this will all finish in 3 years and 11 months since his "80% comment" (people loved converting that into exactly 5 years left) or 4 years and 3 months since his "5 years left" comment when Wano easily has another year or 2 left out of that chunk of time.

Knowing his past history for 15 years and how he generally writes, I don't believe what he says at all. Unless you specifically believe Oda will massively change the way he writes after Wano, alter the pacing of his story, or just plain rush, finishing in that timeframe not possible in my opinion.

Edit: Like he's made the comment already last year and nothing about Wano's pacing has changed. In fact, most people expect the arc to take over another year to conclude.

So what?! My point was that Oda is making arcs that strongly matter to the larger story. Oda isn't diverging. Is he wasting time on secondary characters? Yes. Is he wasting time with the Primary characters? No. The Primary characters are still focused on the endgame. Unlike Skypeia or Water 7, when there was no endgame for them.

And the 2 comments you say are "coherent" (not sure why that word was used? His statements are all coherent, they are just never true) are just 2 of many comments he's made over the years about progress.
You told that volume thing was a joke and shouldn't be considered. And I told you that volume thing is coherent to the other message, so it should be considered.

He has made statements in the past where he says he's "halfway" and then mentions "50%", and both were made around Skypeia.
And...I am back to my original point. skypeia, Water 7, and even Thriller Bark to some extent, didn't have any significance to the story. But Wano does. Dressrosa does. WCI (albeit a lot smaller) does.

Wano easily has another year or 2 left out of that chunk of time.
Wano has only one year left. The fights and some flashbacks during the fights.

Unless you specifically believe Oda will massively change the way he writes after Wano, alter the pacing of his story, or just plain rush, finishing in that timeframe not possible in my opinion.
I am not saying he will finish in 5 years. But I am also not supporting the notion that it will take another 10 years or that One Piece is still 1/3rd left after Wano.
