If he is measuring the distance between himself and Whitebeard metaphorically cause "subordinates" then he is testing the subordinates instead of Whitebeard.

That is what he means with true distance because they are physically close for WB to be in killing range.
The subordinates protecting WB have proven that the true distance means that despite being physically close, WB is NOT in range to be killed. And thus Marco's line - You cannot take our king this early in the game.
