Because in fiction, usually, characters you beat are used when describing someone's strength lmao. Why would the fact he was the captain of multiple pre-prime Yonkos be the highlight if he didn't beat any of them to become their captain (not like him being their captain isn't wanked)? Why would his fucking defeat be the highlight of his career? When he hadn't even been defeated at the time in the story we're in? DIfferent eras do not prevent Mihawk from being stronger than people from any era.
