Character Discussion Was Ace a good character?

#21
a literal hotheaded pirate who chased revenge despite everyone around him telling him

Ace's reaction to thatch dying was completely justified and completely made sense, the rest were cowards. A crewmate just killed one of their own, left, and whitebeard was just going to "let it slide". If there was any other person instead of blackbeard, then whitebeard would have wanted revenge too, its just that due to plot, whitebeard somehow knew that blackbeard was "special", and the reader knows he is special, but in the context of the one piece world itself, blackbeard is just another crewmate. Ace's decision only seems stupid in hindsight to the reader because we know that blackbeard is special and we know that ace ends up dying.

If we didn't know all that, everyone would be calling whitebeard and co a coward and frauds, while ace is the only one with a backbone. All the Ace hate exists purely because of what we know in hindsight.

Ace was a real character

the kid was batchit crazy / depressed / in need of someone and I like that

Even if he was a nice guy overall he went to attack WB over 100 times, even in his sleep, even from behind, just because he wanted to prove something to himself, justify what he thought about himself and his father inheritance etc

It’s almost a Thorffin vs Askeladd type of mental madness

Ace was a cool character

the results were catastrophic for him, his father, family and friends. Hell if Shanks hadn’t arrived it would’ve been the end for his entire crew and little brother too.

Like i said in my previous message, this is all in hindsight. His choice to avenge thatch was praiseworthy, and honestly very badass to just set sail by himself on the grandline with a little boat. It just so happened that whitebeard knew blackbeard was a special exception, and blackbeard despite not even being a division commander ended up being very strong. Ace did well to get blackbeard, and it could be argued that if any other whitebeard pirates just came with him, he could have taken blackbeard out.

Regardless, If blackbeard wasn't this special person then ace would have just killed him and came back. The only "dumb" thing he did was not "running" when akainu baited him, but that whole situation was contrived because oda wanted ace to die while sacrificing himself for luffy. Logically, luffy should've never been able to save ace in the first place, it was all luck, and whitebeard pirates shouldn't be able to escape if ace tried to run, the marines would slaughter them.

Yeah I find nothing wrong with Ace going after Teach, the revenge in this case holds value because such crime diminishes camaraderie in the crew and brings them disgrace

The only "dumb" thing he did was not "running" when akainu baited him, but that whole situation was contrived because oda wanted ace to die while sacrificing himself for luffy
With Akainu however it’s a different case entirely, the entirety of the Whitebeard pirates gathered in a stand against the Navy in order to save his life, thousands died for his sake, and he just threw their sacrifice in the trash because of some cheap slander.

The more I think of it the more pathetic and immature it looks. Even Akainu was shocked he took it personal

The situation was contrived this way because that’s what Oda thinks of Ace, a character of his creation, a hot blooded fool who couldn’t control his emotions. Courageous, but immature.

I don't consider Ace as a good character or bad character. He was a pirate doing what he felt is right. He lived by his own code.

For me, he was a fun character to have on panel. There was emotional touch to his character which oda build well since Alabasta.

Infact, we all were rooting for Ace when he was going after BB and even during MF war.

And, when he fell for Akainu's words and later died saving Luffy, I really felt it.

It was one of those moments which came out of nowhere.

One moment I was excited when Ace got free followed by having anticipation of how they will escape.
And, then next moment when Ace turned his back to face Akainu, suddenly I felt...."no you damn idiot... escape"

Still remember that entire episode because it was just a bit too much to digest and too unexpected. Oda really connected us with Ace so well.

Ace death is the only character death in one piece which actually moved me when it happened.

Sabo will never be able to fill his shoes.

Sabo is just a cheap copy version of Ace. Oda should never have brought back Sabo.

I dislike the fact that his goal after joining Whitebeard was to make him a pirate king. Even though Whitebeard himself wasn't interested or had any desire of such thing.

Ace doesn't seem to really know what Whitebeard actually wants. This kinda shows that Ace doesn't really have deep meaningful connection with Whitebeard which makes all those sacrifice seems rather futile.

If in the real world someone insulted your family, would you just shut up and run away?
Don't you remember that Zidane incident at the World Cup?
Or when Eric Cantona attacked a fan?
People here are very idealistic, anyone would be angry in that situation, that's why I say Ace had a logical personality.
Anyone can get angry quickly in a second and completely lose control of their brain and logic.

Worst Character of one piece.

He got dadan as a lovely mother, yet he says that only WB loved him as a son.
Wtf? His daddy issues don't even make sense, he cries because the father he never met is bad talked by someone? Lmao. J

Because Ace was never about himself but about others and his family

Ace wanted to be accepted and wanted to give everything to his new dad and brothers

But yeah WB was never about being PK or anything and one day Ace would have understood it

If I was held hostage by an enemy because I made a mistake and lost a fight, then my entire family starts a full blown war to save me and many of my them lose their lives, then yes I would shut the fuck up at some cheap slander, and not let their sacrifices go to waste, how is this even debatable 😂
Ace is hot blooded and full of himself, and what he did was disrespectful towards his father who waged war against the world to save him
Everyone would feel angry hearing these words, but controlling such anger is what makes someone wise and capable, there is always time for payback

I gave real examples of adults who later lost their valuable things. Not all people are the same and I can say that 99% of people would have done the same thing. You look at this ideally, when angry, no one pays attention to the profit or loss and just wants to vent their anger.

Ngl the older I get the more I appreciate his character.

His final action particular.

He couldn't just let someone trash talk a man that started a freaking war to save him, no matter who that Maybe.

Ace felt greatly indebted to WhiteBeard

Defending his honour is the least thing he can do.

I truly understand you my man.

You gave examples of football players attacking people inside the pitch with no real consequences or immediate danger on their lives or the lives of their loved one, this does not correlate to a battle scenario where things are actually at stake
If 99% of people can be fiddled with by a couple worthless words, then 99% of people have the mental capacity of a teenager

Many of the WBP veterans heard what Akainu said but moved on and focused on the objective, are you calling Marco and Izou cowards, two men who walked into Marineford and Onigashima with bravery to save their comrades

Even Luffy controlled himself in Impel Down after Jinbe schooled him

Anyway, all those people destroyed the dream of a team and even their country because they just couldn't be patient with a few words.
Oda was focused on Ace at that moment. Yes, I think the others might have felt the same way if they heard those words and were in the center of the story.
Even Zoro was angry about the arm being cut off of someone he had known for a few days. While Whitebeard was like Ace's father, he had every right to be angry, and like Luffy, who Jimbe helped, there was no one to calm Ace down.
I said that not all people are the same. Obviously, there are differences between the patience of a 40-year-old and a 20-year-old.
