Seems rather sus that Oda drew that Xebec pose with his sword for the 2nd time versus Imu.
It definitely is the sword in Imu's flower room, blud couldn't ignore stealing the sword which turned him into kebab.

The emphasis on Garling's introduction "Supreme Commander of the Knights of God and Champion of God Valley" is to strong to not have a root of truth imo.
Titles in One Piece are always blurry but have a solid base, meaning that usually the end result is true but how it was achieved is modified or even omitted.
Garp is a perfect example of this: he gained the title of "Hero of the Marines" after the God Valley incident, and the story told in the present day is that he cooperated with Roger to protect civilian and eliminate Xebec (described as a monstrous figure). Now, this will probably come close to the truth without being the full truth (we're seeing it in these chapters) but we can all agree that the told story is more glorifying that close to reality.
I think the same goes for Garling: his title indicates that he really destinguished himself during the God Valley incident to the point of being called the Champion, BUT that is only the historical end result. We still have to see how he achieves that, just like Garp...
Imo, it won't be in an honorable way but rather a pragmatic way. He could, as you said, come in when Xebec is already defeated and finish him off in front of everybody (maybe in front of Eris & Teach), or maybe he could change the tides of the battle by taking Eris and Teach hostages and force Xebec to submission (and consequent death).
What's sure is that he will, by the end of this battle, be the MVP. The one that that played the key move for Imu to succeed.
I exclude the possibility of his title being falsely given. What would be the point of it? Giving the Champion title to Garp would've been an easier way. But that didn't happen for a reason...
Whoever thinks Garling will keep laying in that forest for the rest of the battle is up for a big disappointment.
