General & Others Gecko Moria the underrated former Warlord

As someone who likes Moria, I've always felt that his character is very underrated and that he gets so much unnecessary hate. Sure Moria may not be this powerful badass villain like Doflamingo and Crocodile but he is still a very interesting character with so much going on.

When Oda portrayed Moria as this lazy pirate who mainly relies on his zombies and is someone who isn't nearly as motivated like he was in the past, it's obvious that through Moria Oda was showing us that Luffy would have end up in a similar situation if he went to the New World unprepared and lost his entire crew. Now despite Moria not being as motivated like he was in the past, he still didn't completely give up on the pirate life and still wanted to become Pirate King. However his main goal was to get his revenge on Kaido that's why Moria was building up his zombie army for decades, even though Moria was this lazy pirate who wasn't nearly as motivated like he was in the past he still never gave up on his dream and his goal for revenge.

In the past Moria started his piracy right after Roger's execution eventually gaining a bounty of 320,000,000 and becoming a very well known pirate, however less than a year later he would fight with Kaido and his crew at Wano and the fight against the Beasts Pirate would result in the defeat of Moria and the death of his entire crew. His defeat and the death of his crew changed who he was and it changed his ideals of a crew, he no longer wanted living crew members with the exception of a very few he now wanted zombies as he can easily replace them thanks to his devil fruit ability.

Now despite the loss of Moria's old crew, Moria did still care for them in fact Moria is someone who deeply cares for his subordinates, he even went to Fullalead Island which is under the control of the Blackbeard Pirates just to look for Absalom. He knows how strong and dangerous the Blackbeard Pirates are but he still went to their island just look for his subordinate, and when he thought he saw Absalom he was happy to see him alive. I never understood why some people made fun of Moria for going into a Yonko's territory to save a subordinate he cares about while at the same time praising Luffy who did a similar thing.

Moria is also seen as a father figure to Perona whom he adopted and raised as his own, and remember that this took place after Moria's defeat at Wano. You could tell that Moria treated Perona very well even spoiling her and even having the zombies serve her, Perona in return also cares for Moria and sees him as a father that she never had and when she saw the Moria was still alive she was so happy to the point that she decided to leave Kuraigana Island in order to look for him.

Sure Moria isn't this badass pirate but he is still someone who cares deeply for his subordinates, and he still never gave up on his goals and his life as a pirate despite being defeated by Kaido and his crew. Moria is such a heavily underrated character who many still don't understand, but imo I think Oda did a really good job portraying his character and I do think that he's one of the more interesting former Warlords.

Good post

Yes Moria is quite underrated, he was a cool character with an original personality and a bit of complexity. I love his troll attitude, when he let Luffy chase him in the woods etc.

I think the whole Thriller Bark arc is underrated. Oars fight was awesome, some great gag moments, Moria, Kuma, Ussop vs Perona, Brook story etc.

I agree the Thriller Bark arc is underrated, with so many funny and good moments it's one of my most favorite arcs.

Honnestly he is my favorite original Warlords with his vampire design, his cool and creative shadow powers and his personnality much more complex and deep that it looks as you described with him still genuinely caring for his subordinates despite claiming that he gave up on love and living minions after the traumatic loss of his first and beloved crew at the hands of Kaido.

I really hope we'll see at least a bit of him during Wano arc outside of his appearance at Beehive and that he'll get at least a glorious revenge against Blackbeard for Absalom's death with him feigning to join Blackbeard only to stab him at the right moment and to mock him for having believed that he would serve him despite having killed one of his nakamas.

Moria does not fit the typical badass scheme, and he seemed quite pathetic at times, hence why some people dislike him.
That´s one of the things that makes OP special though, the fact that such characters can also be rather menacing.
The same applies to Blackbeard btw, whose appearance, behavior and so forth, does not fit that scheme either.

Something tells me he joined the Blackbeard Pirates only to save himself.

There is no way he would had taken on Blackbeard, Catarina, and Shiryu alone. All three of them would be too much for him.
Well it's only to better backstab them and avenge Absalom later.

Teach has this strange and very dangerous habit of trying to recruit people who hate his guts and who often lost a loved one because of him. It can only backfire on him.

I feel like it can be easily overlooked that a big reason Moria did what he did was because Kaido beat him and killed much of his crew, leaving him traumatized and concluded that the best way to cope with it was to steal and use dead people rather than train and support living people. His grudge towards Kaido and Blackbeard considered, I feel that it sets up for a great opportunity for Moria, if begrudgingly, helping Luffy to defeat those Yonko, and possibly be on a more meaningful level than Crocodile helping Luffy.
