As someone who likes Moria, I've always felt that his character is very underrated and that he gets so much unnecessary hate. Sure Moria may not be this powerful badass villain like Doflamingo and Crocodile but he is still a very interesting character with so much going on.
When Oda portrayed Moria as this lazy pirate who mainly relies on his zombies and is someone who isn't nearly as motivated like he was in the past, it's obvious that through Moria Oda was showing us that Luffy would have end up in a similar situation if he went to the New World unprepared and lost his entire crew. Now despite Moria not being as motivated like he was in the past, he still didn't completely give up on the pirate life and still wanted to become Pirate King. However his main goal was to get his revenge on Kaido that's why Moria was building up his zombie army for decades, even though Moria was this lazy pirate who wasn't nearly as motivated like he was in the past he still never gave up on his dream and his goal for revenge.
In the past Moria started his piracy right after Roger's execution eventually gaining a bounty of 320,000,000 and becoming a very well known pirate, however less than a year later he would fight with Kaido and his crew at Wano and the fight against the Beasts Pirate would result in the defeat of Moria and the death of his entire crew. His defeat and the death of his crew changed who he was and it changed his ideals of a crew, he no longer wanted living crew members with the exception of a very few he now wanted zombies as he can easily replace them thanks to his devil fruit ability.
Now despite the loss of Moria's old crew, Moria did still care for them in fact Moria is someone who deeply cares for his subordinates, he even went to Fullalead Island which is under the control of the Blackbeard Pirates just to look for Absalom. He knows how strong and dangerous the Blackbeard Pirates are but he still went to their island just look for his subordinate, and when he thought he saw Absalom he was happy to see him alive. I never understood why some people made fun of Moria for going into a Yonko's territory to save a subordinate he cares about while at the same time praising Luffy who did a similar thing.
Moria is also seen as a father figure to Perona whom he adopted and raised as his own, and remember that this took place after Moria's defeat at Wano. You could tell that Moria treated Perona very well even spoiling her and even having the zombies serve her, Perona in return also cares for Moria and sees him as a father that she never had and when she saw the Moria was still alive she was so happy to the point that she decided to leave Kuraigana Island in order to look for him.
Sure Moria isn't this badass pirate but he is still someone who cares deeply for his subordinates, and he still never gave up on his goals and his life as a pirate despite being defeated by Kaido and his crew. Moria is such a heavily underrated character who many still don't understand, but imo I think Oda did a really good job portraying his character and I do think that he's one of the more interesting former Warlords.
