I do believe that Whitebeard intended to nurture Ace for him to become the Pirate King one day, but I don't think that he was already stronger than Marco, otherwise Marco would never go after Blackbeard during the timeskip (wouldn't make sense to face someone MUCH stronger than him, since BB was able to defeat Ace before having the Gura Gura no Mi).

We can make a power scaling according to the timeline of the fights: Law (Egghead Arc) > Marco > Ace.

Actually, I still think that Graham wasn't the "first" first mate. We know that WB started recruiting crewmembers 33 years ago (5 years after God Valley), so he probably roamed about with the Polo Pirates for a time (they could've been an outline for his future crew, with a family-like system). At some point, Graham died and WB adopted Marco; it was probably the start of the WB Pirates.


Ofc, WB could've been the captain of the Polo Pirates and they later turned into the WB Pirates, but it wouldn't make much sense to me. Newgate has been a subordinate to a lesser captain in the past, so it wouldn't be weird if he joined Graham, who seems to be a strong pirate himself. IMO, at most they became a subordinate crew later on.

Maybe he joined under him along with his crew. We know smaller crew integrating into larger crews is a pretty common. So maybe in his case he respect Whitebeard so much he decided to join under him with his crew or even disband his crew to follow him

Obviously wasn’t ace oden or teach and Marco and jozu were just apprentices at the time. Tho technically Marco being an apprentice doesn’t really stop him from being the first wbp. IMO outside of Marco it’s between vista, whitey bay, and rakuyo. Why? Because their the most in the front…

Imo it’s between laffitte and burgess but I lean more towards laffitte since he seems the most standout og member


I don’t think we officially know but im pretty sure Beckman is shanks’s first successful recruit. Them having a relationship similar to kid/killer and Roger/rayleigh Beckman being referred to as his partner


Also on the marine side of things bogard was definitely Garp’s first mate same way helmeppo and Tashigi are to Koby and smoker
