SPOILER
Sanji's next evolution from ifrit will be Asmodeus, the king of Ifrits
Inception
After a twitter post from @
Funoyaki, I became aware of how Sanji's diable jambe and ifrit jambe actually share the same Kanji which is the "ma"or 魔. I was really interested in the 魔 symbol itself. First I found out that an ifrit is a higher ranked of devil/spirit, showing a progression from the generic devil or even low class devil that is used for Sanji's diable jambe.
An ifrit (or afrit) is a powerful class of supernatural beings in Islamic mythology and Arabian folklore, frequently depicted as malevolent, rebellious, and formidable fire spirits.
This then had me search up a list of all devils or demonic creatures that are written with the exact same "魔" and one stuck out the most to me being:
Maou (魔王): Literally "demon king," "archdemon," or "dark lord." This title is commonly used for the supreme ruler of demons.
Sanji and Conquror's haki
I believe Sanji's story has building up to him getting conqueror's haki. I believe as one of the wings of the pirate king, it fits in symbolically that both wings would be kings in their own right which is why they can make Luffy fly so high. However there's a lot more backing this like Zeff's statement about Sanji being just like Luffy and Zoro but he is stifling his own "spear". Sanji being such a natural leader that the marine G5 started following him in punk hazard, Sanji being able to naturally attract allies and turn enemies into allies with Kinemon, Viola and Pudding and one other way this has been represented is in the progression of Sanji's flames and status.
Firstly diable jambe or the devil leg, uses the word "Akuma", meaning a low-class or poor devil. When we meet Sanji he's a cook at the baratie, something that is considered a low-class by his biological family and he is stifling his own potential rotting away at the baratie. Sanji only unlocks diable jambe in his fight vs jabra, in enies lobby which is an arc that symbolizes the crew breaking apart but reforming back much stronger than they have ever been. And similarly this became Sanji's ace move, but with drawback for the rest pre timeskip and in post timeskip it remains as more of a casual but effective power up for Sanji's moves, with no drawbacks thanks to him learning basic armament haki.
After Dressrosa and Zou we start to find out more about Sanji's past, that he is not just some cook from the east blue, but he's a prince of Germa. This revelation is coincided by Sanji gaining the raid suit and later awakening his dormant Germa modifications. Once Sanji eventually accepts who he is and embraces the modification he gained from his lineage as a prince and combines it with his now far more improved armament haki, his flames upgrade from those of a low class devil to a high ranking devil, an ifrit. However an important distinction is made here regarding Sanji's flames, it is implied that they have no limit, the only thing limiting them is Sanji's own durability. For Sanji's next evolution, I believe it only makes sense that he should rise to an even higher rank than before, this means no longer just a prince but a king, from armament haki to kings haki and from ifrit to king of the ifrits, Asmodeus.
Why Asmodeus?
I got the name from another theory on
facebook. I came about this post after trying to figure out what the power up will be called in the actual moment or by the character. Sanji's attacks are all french and performed as such by his VAs in most of the dubbed languages. Diable jambe uses the french words for devil and leg, but it is not so simple with ifrit as in japanese it is written as "Majin". However if it were to be translated directly from french it would be something like Dieu démon (Demon god - literal) or Esprit malfaisant (Evil spirit)
Ifrit Jambe: Written as 魔神風脚 (Majin Kaze Kyaku), where 魔神 means "Demon God".
The word spoken is referencing an actual type of demon in islamic folklore not japanese. I believe this was done to not break the theme of Sanji's attack names not being spoken in japanese, but are written as such. So I believe while Sanji's next evolution will be written as 魔王風脚 (Maou Kaze Kyaku) it will actually be spoken as Asmoday jambe or アスモデジャンブ (Asumode Janbu)
Asmodeus is one of the results I got when I searched for known mythological figures who were king of demons or devils in any western folklore or mythology. Asmodeus was the first to show up and after reading up more about Amodeus and seeing their depictions I was convinced, this had to be the one Oda would choose; here is a summary of the connections:
The Lame Leg: In many occult texts, such as the Dictionnaire Infernal, Asmodeus is famously depicted as the "Limping Devil" (Le Diable Boiteux) with one leg being different or injured—specifically a rooster’s leg or a "cock's foot".
This could be hinting at something possibly happening to Sanji's leg and hi epithet is black leg, referencing a single leg. Maybe he creates a flame so hot he chars it.
The Fire Breather: Asmodeus is a King of Hell often associated with fire. The King of Ifrits: In some Islamic lore, Asmodeus is actually referred to as the King of the Ifrits.
Since Sanji just "mastered" Ifrit, moving to the King who rules them is a perfect narrative step
I find this theory in reddit bu theory itself is not my goal what i want to know is that the ma魔 word which is used for both diable and ifrit, is that the same word for Imus Maki cause if it is Sanji may be a maki user.
Now that i looked it up it is literally same word Imu used for Omen so Sanjis fire is actually Maki魔?
