General & Others Why is Skypiea arc so underrated?

#21
I don't think this arc is that underrated

Personally it is one of my favorite arc

So many great moments and characters
You sure? Pretty much worst rated pre-TS arc and also when the sales dived until Enies Lobby

OT: Because it is the best arc, duh

The most salient aspect of that arc which people usually fail to grasp is how Skypiea is potentially a microcosm of the entire story itself.
Put very well, Jaya+Skypeia is like the core of the entire story, also no coincidence i would say that all the main players besides Yonkou and Im were introduced then.

:whitepress: people really have no taste
If you ask me, yes, but the more diplomatic answer is, people look for different stuff, and what the majority seems to look for was not present in Skypeia as it was in other arcs

Among other stuff:
1) Had next to none personal drama of the Strawhats, they were only connected through the theme of the saga and Luffy´s antithesis to Enel (Arlong had Nami drama, Alabasta had Vivi drama, W7 had Robin and Usopp drama, TB had the Kuma stuff)
2) Hence, if you look for personal drama, the fight lacked the personal investment and context in contrast to let´s say CP9 vs Strawhats, Luffy vs Croc (due to Vivi) or Luffy vs Arlong
3) The priests were really quirky with no straight faced traditional badass type that the other arcs featured like Lucci, Arlong, Croc and Mr1, Ryuma and so forth
4) Admittedly, the version of the typical "we have to keep Luffy away from the main stuff until the climax of the arc" was pretty dumb

I like skypiea now but i used to hate it
I even told my friend to skip the arc but he didn't listen, he watched it and then came to me and said the arc was awesome :lusalty:
The only things i liked the first time watching were the comedy and Noland's flashback
the villains weren't interesting to me at all, the fights aren't the best and the pacing is very bad atleast in the anime also i used to be a lot more religious so stuff like calling Enel God and Zoro saying he doesn't believe in God bothered me
Also i didn't really care or connect with the natives and suppurting cast like Connis, Aisa ... as much as i did with Alabasta, Water 7 and east blue ones
And the stuff with Roger... i forgot all of it the moment we left
But i like and appreciate the arc a lot more now
It's probably in my top 5

The arc was the reason i stopped watching OP for at least 10 years or so
Why tho?

Quite simple: It doesn't have a great or really memorable fight. That's what most shonen readers look for. Enel vs Luffy is more of a gimmick battle, than an actual fight.

I for one agree with you btw, Jaya/Skypiea is one of the very best OP sagas.
It had several side fights that were actually good/decent imo.

The point about Enel calling himself God is that he is a false god. He's actually just a guy with a very strong superpower who uses strength as the defining trait of what a 'God' is.

Most shonen readers don't care about "side fights" though. They want an epic battle like Luffy vs Lucci or Luffy vs Crocodile to end the arc, while the crewmates all get their own memorable 1-vs-1s (like Zoro vs Mr.1 or Sanji vs Jabura etc.).

Skypiea didn't provide that.

The best "fight" we got was Luffy temporarily knocking Enel out with this gigantic gold-ball around his fist. Enel even got up the very next chapter and decided to rage-quit.

Like I said: I for one absolutely love Skypiea and think it's one of Oda's best works, but many shonen readers just miss those straightforward, generic "final battles" that an arc usually provides.

Outside of Ace and WB, nobody ever died in OP outside of flashbacks ...
There was three royal guards who died in Arabasta, plus much bigger number of scrubs. But the fact that Ganfoll survived all Enel attack display his attacks as weak...only one scrub died from his attack, litteraly everyone survived even srcubs, while many people died in Arabasta...so this is just one of the reasons.

Wyper/Zoro/Gan Fall vs Enel was amazing

Luffy vs Wyper was great

The shandians fighting style with dials was really good

Enel destroying everyone was fun

Noland flashback is the best one with Fisher Tiger one. This is part of the best One piece ever deliver,

The whole golden city was interesting and the feeling of adventure was top notch, Gold roger message etc.

The war between the two people was interesting.

Lots of good points

Even then..... Skypiea bodies every Post Timeskip Arc so far honestly. In terms of Action, Plot, Art(literally has some of the dopest panels in the One Piece series) basically beats the arcs post timeskip in almost every aspect. Plus the Strawhat Greatness in the arc is strong.
