General & Others "Whitebeard = Roger" translation issues.

"海賊王〟 - Pirate King
ロジャーと - With Roger
唯 - only
互角に戦っ - fought evenly
た伝説の - The legendary
〝怪物〟 - Monster
Basically Whitebeard was the only legendary monster who ONCE fought with the Pirate King evenly.
The translations of him simply being somebody who crossed the seas with Roger or somebody who is simply an equal of Roger's are wrong.
So I stand corrected on this, Whitebeard once was able to fight with the Pirate King Gol D. Roger evenly. Which is similar to what Buggy said that Whitebeard was able to fight Roger to a standstill in A fight. This is referring to a fight where Whitebeard was able to tie with Gol D. Roger, and that fight would be their last fight that we saw on panel, where both of them + their crews balanced each other out.

As I've already said, there's only 3-4 years of a window where Whitebeard's crew & Roger's crew would've fought against each other, and this is long before the clash we saw, before even Oden joined, at that time it was already declared Roger's era. According to WB they had fought numerous times in those 3-4 years, the Marines & the rest of the world would 100% know if they were equals lol, just like how Dracule & Shanks duels became renowned, it's crazy to even think /assume that the result of those fights weren't renowned.

"Rest of the world is just going off of reputation", who is talking about rest of the world? Not me. I'm talking about individuals who specifically knew Roger & his strength. Garp had fought against both Roger & Whitebeard. Sengoku had done the same, to both of them it was "Roger's era" not "Whitebeard & Roger's era". The "era" is given to the person who is the strongest pirate, as Xebec was before Roger and as Whitebeard was after Roger, and as Blackbeard claimed himself to be the strongest pirate out there now, thus declaring his era. Shiki, the ex-crewmate of Whitebeard and somebody competed against both of them who fought Roger just 2 years prior to when Whitebeard fought him, put himself & Whitebeard inferior to Roger.
Don Chinjao, also had fought against the Roger pirates, and knew Roger & Rayleigh's strength personally. More than likely knew Whitebeard's strength personally as well, as he considered Kaido, Shanks, Big Mom inferior to Whitebeard. Just as he considered Whitebeard inferior to Roger.
Now to @HA001's great point of Roger never fighting anyone. It is very much possible that he never fought Shiki, Garp, Sengoku, and such during his last journey (since I believe it would be shown if he had a major battle during that year and half or so). In fact going beyond what HA001 said, it's very much plausible that Shiki is the only big fight Roger had after he got sick, only 1 year after he got sick. Now we know the sickness of Roger's was gradually getting worst as time went on. Meaning the Roger that fought against Shiki was superior to the Roger that fought against Whitebeard.
If Garp & Sengoku didn't fight a sick Roger after Whitebeard or even after Shiki, it's understandable why they would view Roger > Whitebeard. Because when they fought against the two, Roger was the stronger opponent. In fact, if we look at the confrontation between Sengoku - Whitebeard at Marineford, it seems to be that of equals. Then when Garp steps up to the platform, he smirkingly looks at Whitebeard, as if he has no problem taking him on. Oda could've easily made the Marine duo look inferior to Whitebeard then, but he chose not to, instead he had Whitebeard say "He's just an old man now" so the Whitebeard pirates wouldn't be scared of Garp's prowess.
But yea, Buggy's statement and the Narrator's statement are referring to the 1 fight 3-day fight that happened between Gold Roger & Whitebeard. This will be my last post on it, you're more than welcomed to point out any further disagreements or any flaws in my reasoning that you may see here. Cheers!

This is def. the more reasonable take.
In fact it can be argued that by the time Roger finished his journey of Laughtale and was in his last year or so, that Whitebeard > Roger. Because the sickness wasn't consistently the same, rather it kept getting worst over time. Year 1 (of sickness) Roger > year 2 Roger > year 3 Roger > year 4 Roger.

I think you're confusing greatest pirate with strongest pirate. Thats not a title that just refers to individual strength. It's also about your feats as a Pirate. Roger held greater fame/infamy than the others.

Still don't think this was the case. Buggy referring to one specific fight when he had likely witnessed multiple just doesn't make any sense. If the goal was to convey how strong Whitebeard was using that fight in itself as an example doesn't really accomplish that.

I am curious to know the real translation of the first page. Yo @Den_Den_Mushi , could you translate the part of this raw where Whitebeard gets compared to Roger? =>
