Zoro attack Apoo from the front. He saw Zoro preparing to attack right before he attacked.

Look at his facial expression when he was blocking Drake's attack. Then look at his facial expression right before the scene changed to Zoro who was preparing to attack. There's a huge difference between the two. Since Drake couldn't get a single attack in it tells us his new facial expression was because of Zoro.

It doesn't matter if he attacked him from the front though. Killer attacked Zoro from the front. It's still considered a surprise attack. Ulti came from in front of Luffy and grabbed him. Do you think Ulti would've been able to grab Luffy like that in a 1 on 1 fight? Of course not, but Luffy fighting Page One gave her the opening she needed to grab him and ALMOST force him into G4.
